Considering that we sold him for 80million and he has a 1billion release clause - we cannot afford him.

He is, which is why he's so good at the holding role. The reason I'd prefer him to do that rather than get combative sort, is that he does both sides, intercept/protect the back 4, and can also start play from that. He actually ends up dictating the game more than traditional combination of two CM's at the base do. Why I'd like Thiago is that he would bring a different dimension to that base, being able to run past opposing CM's when starting attacks, as well as everything else he offers.

The problem comes when opposing teams target him (which they should all do), and Carrick is set up as the 1 in a 4-1-x-x formation, with no other outlet. Surprisingly last season, most teams let him get way with running the game, which is why we walked the League. If we had another proper CM to fill in in a 4-2-3-1, we wouldn't have to worry about opposing teams closing him down and thus stifling our attacks. Cleverly can do a job, but I don't think SAF trusted his longer passing and ability to create space for himself when under pressure, so he was pushed further forward.

Can't wait to see Kagawa taking his proper place as an attacking mid. Hope DM makes it happen.

The more you look at Carrick's overall game, the more you realise that he is becoming, no, has become indispensable to United. Ironically- his ability and performances in the holding role are similar to Lucas' at Liverpool.

Ah, that was my concern really, him being targeted. You are right, most opposition teams didn't do this last season (in the league at least). Perhaps the movement of Cleverly aided in that regard? Not so much the case of protecting Carrick, but diverting players away from him.

This is what I am excited to see. He was fantastic for Dortmund, and DM does love his skilled players- look at Osman and Pienaar.

True, though I feel Carrick is more solid and more dependable, though this might be due to Lucas' injuries.

Not really, though I'm sure it has happened occasionally. It's just something that wasn't addressed by opposing managers this season for some reason, made all the more noticeable when it did happen.

Looks like Thiago is going to Bayern, Pep is in a press conference and has said as much. Pretty poor start to the transfer window by United.
 
Sorry that last statement of mine was a bit misleading, here is Peps latest statements wrt Thiago:

Some other factors to take into consideration, Thiago's agent is Peps brother. This Bayern story has always been around the whole transfer saga, but it was properly announced last night by a German paper called "Cope", hence the question posed to Pep in his conference today.

You could see this in two ways, Pep wouldnt speak about another player unless the transfer was imminent. Or its a last ditch attempt to get Thiago. Personally i think this makes Bayern forerunners to sign Thiago now.

Ye but who exactly is Thiago going to replace @ Bayern? Javier Martinez? Bastian? Shaqiri? Robben? Ribery? Gotze? Kroos?

If that is the case then United should put in a bid for Kroos or Javier Martinez :)

To be fair- other than Kroos, Schweinsteiger and Martinez, they are don't have much else in central midfield, especially with Tymoshchuk moving on. A move for Thiago does make sense.
