Thats the point - if you wanna dissect stats then you have to ask what did Carrick actually do in thise games when we had all those other players. Spouting stats and seeing what he does is different

This sums it up nicely imo:

Carrick is not the English Pirlo. He’s just not. He lacks both the charisma and talent. And you really can believe it’s not Scholes.

But he is a very good midfielder who makes doing most things well look easy. What he needs more than anything is the kind of midfield companion who will steal the spotlight from him.
