Ref: We got it wrong twice against the Blues

It won't help their struggling cause on the points table but the Blues have had the consolation of Sanzar refereeing boss Lyndon Bray admitting his officials erred with two try-scoring decisions against Sir John Kirwan's team on their just completed tour of South Africa.

Last Sunday's mistake was hugely costly with the Lions wrongly awarded a try in their 39-36 win at Ellis Park in Johannesburg.

Bray posted his explanations via videos on the Sanzar website and it wasn't pleasant viewing for his own crew or the Blues team.

He said the television match official Johan Greef shouldn't have awarded Coenie van Wyk a try in the 60th minute after having the scoring movement referred to him by referee Stuart Berry.

Bray said that Blues wing Charles Piutau jolted the ball from Lions back Deon van Rensburg in his tackle and that the All Black did not deliberately try to rip possession.

Bray said the onus was on the ball carrier to maintain possession while being tackled. That meant it should have been ruled as a knock on and van Wyk's touchdown of the loose ball should not have counted.

Kirwan was livid after the match, demanding an explanation, especially with the Lions try coming amidst a dogged fightback from the Blues that ended agonisingly short.

Bray also passed comment on the Blues' 38-22 loss to the Bulls the week before in Pretoria.

The Bulls were awarded a late try to prop Marcel van der Merwe that earned them a bonus point.

Bray confirmed the Blues' suspicions that van der Merwe had scored with a double movement after being tackled just short of the line.

The Blues returned home from South Africa with just two bonus points from their two matches, blurring the promising start they had made to the championship with their 35-24 demolition of the Crusaders at Eden Park before heading to the republic.

The Blues are back at Eden Park on Saturday hosting the Cheetahs.
