Official Super Rugby 2016 Thread

Oh yeah. Clearly. That's what happens when you try to work, watch Sevens, watch the Proteas crumble and keep an eye on MyBB. Sorry.

As far as I understand only SARU-only contracted players will be considered for that option. No players under contract with other unions.
And basically those are only Sevens players. Hougaard being one of them now.

But with the Sevens series on-going and Olympics preparations to think about. I don't think they will go that route too often or easily.

If I am not reading it wrong it says: "A few of the other South African franchises are also likely to be asked to release some of their fringe players to the Kings."

So with Hougaard, if he doesn't play for the Kings, he'll be playing for no one? (because he does not have a bulls contract)

Right?

Yes and no.

Central contracted players is a whole new thing to SA. All Blacks have been doing it forever.

Other unions can still "buy" his services from SARU I believe.

And according to an earlier report, SARU wants R100k per game from the Bulls if they want to use him.

But if SARU wants to place him in PE. Then he will play in PE. (I'm sure at a rate as well)

But so what if Hougaard is asked to play at the Kings?

Must have been a very good reason for not renewing his Bulls contract and like McD has pointed out to me before. He has some firm connections in PE.

If it means he gets good game time while not involved with the Sevens and the Kings have a world class player to add much needed experience and oomph... I'm all for it.

I am not necessarily talking about Hougaard

And at scrum half and not all over the place...

Yes please.

Key words there are "fringe players".

If the unions do oblige I can promise you it will not be for free and SARU will assist the Kings with these deals.

And why not?

I'm all for strengthening our teams and allowing players to get quality game time against good opposition as opposed to cricket score losses and players just sitting in the stands after week in and week out putting in the effort at training.

This is one reason NZ rugby is always one step ahead of us, I believe.

Point taken.

But the unions can easily turn around on SARU and also demand R100 000 per game as they did with the Bulls. I believe as you said it would be great for SA Rugby to have players play against quality teams and not just warm the bench or sit in the stands, but the way SARU is approaching this is going to bite them in the arse.

And it will not be the Super Rugby frachises but the provinces... fine line but there is a distinction.

As an example look at the T20 RamSlam this year. Theunis de Bruyn is a Titans player but was released to play for the Knights as they knew he would not get any game time in Pretoria. It's a win-win for all three parties.

Welcome to South African rugby.

This is of course all new to everybody and our rugby structures are not exactly known to work together for the greater cause.

From the boardroom to the field our rugby has been full of individualism in the majority of the pro era.

Man, I just love rugby. Wish it wasn't this complicated all the time.

Which begs the question... who is SARU? (I know the answer) :p

The players mentioned contracts ended with their unions and are now signed by the Kings right?

I think if we adapt the draft system the 'mericans have with their football it would open up a whole new world for our rugby, seeing as we are moving to the professional era.

I'm still such a massive fan of Watermeyer. And looking forward to see him at the Kings.

I remember watching him play for Waterkloof and then the Jnr Boks and thinking: "We have a legend in the making".

Then "I-think-I'm-a-legend-before-I'm-a-legend" happened to him and he became just another flash in the pan.

At the Pumas he got it back together again. Think Jimmy moered him right. :D
But probably too late.

Nevertheless. Such a great player.
