Death of pro rugby in Eastern Province?

Cape Town - Professional rugby in the Eastern Province will in all likelihood cease to exist from next week.

According to Netwerk24, the EPRU will no longer contest the liquidation order which was obtained by 36 unpaid former players.

The union on Tuesday officially withdrew a business rescue plan in the Port Elizabeth High Court where a final decision on liquidation of the union will be made on August 4.

“The EPRU has no more cards left to play,” a source told Netwerk24.

“On Tuesday there was still the possibility that the union could come up with another business plan, but the fact that EP is not even prepared to fight the liquidation order anymore, speaks volumes.”

Another interested party said the union has agreed to pay the players’ legal fees.

“It is definitely a victory for the players,” he said. “But it could be bittersweet. The lawyers must still finally convince the court to enforce the liquidation order. So it’s not yet time to relax.”

However, doubts remain whether the union would be able to generate enough money by selling what is believed to be limited assets.

There is therefore the possibility that the players would only receive parts of their outstanding salaries.

I really do not think that the Canes must play Dane... he may end up missing the All Blacks coming The Rugby Championship.

Chiefs coach, Dave Rennie, meanwhile has announced three changes to his starting XV.

Reserve All Blacks scrum-half Tawera Kerr-Barlow has been preferred ahead of Brad Weber, who drops back to the bench.

Recently capped All Blacks centre Seta Tamanivalu returns from injury and starts at outside-centre and will partner Anton Lienert-Brown, Stephen Donald drops out of the squad with a lat injury.

In a boost for the squad, Japanese international backrower Michael Leitch also returns to the squad and will provide experience off the bench.

In what will be their first semi-final appearance since 2001, the Lions will host the Highlanders.

Highlanders coach Jamie Joseph had made a couple of changes to his side’s pack.

Loose-forward James Lentjes replace co-captain Shane Christie and Alex Ainley starts in the second-row pushing Luke Whitelock to No 8.

Liam Squire drops back to the bench.

It’s the same starting backline which saw off the Brumbies last weekend in Canberra.

Joseph has gone in with a six-two split on the bench with Greg Pleasants-Tate, prop Ross Geldenhuys and lock Joe Wheeler added to the squad.

Versatile Marty Banks makes his return from injury to take his place on the bench.

The Emirates Lions are not only the last South African Vodacom Super Rugby team standing, but also the ‪#‎Tries4Books‬ winners with 76 tries scored this season! Vodacom has committed to giving R2 072 000 so far this season. Let’s hope the Emirates Lions score more tries on Saturday!

Yah, but that stadium can take what? 65k people? 50 would be good. People were complaining about the ticket prices... but Lions have come out and said that they have to make about 3mil on the day just to break even. Of the three they have to pay the Highlanders 1mil.

REMUNERATION

The provinces hosting the semi-final and/or final matches of the Currie Cup Premier Division shall pay the visiting province the following amounts within fourteen (14) days from the date of the semi-final and/or final matches:

Final: R500 000 (five hundred thousand rand only)
Semi-Final: R250 000 (two hundred-and-fifty thousand rand only)

For the semi-finals and final of the Currie Cup First Division no levy shall be payable by the hosting province to the visiting province.

The same with the ITM Cup. I do not know whether the Aussies has implemented a similar union agreement. This also apply to descending competition structures, domestic club rugby leagues being exempt which may have changed. I have noted that the above does exclude the Currie Cup First Division.

Under Sanzaar rules the host union are required to pay a fee of $75,000 in Australian dollars to the visiting clubs for the first round of playoff games, ensuring the three New Zealand sides, as well as the Sharks from South Africa, are rewarded for qualifying.

Sanzaar also pays for the majority of the travelling team's costs during the playoffs. Flights, accommodation, airline and departure taxes and meals are all covered.

The host union is expected to pay for the bus and luggage transfers, as well as any costs associated with the venue hire for training fields.

The travelling side pays for additional touring party members, gym or swimming pool hire, transport costs for training and liaison officer costs if residing in the team hotel.

I always wanted the Lions to play the full 80 min, win or lose. This last 2 year I enjoyed watching The Lions play. Remember back in 2007-08 The lions played well for 40 to 60 mins :mad:. The player recruitment is better,in the past we signed good players they play in super rugby then never use in currie cup or next year's super rugby but the player is on a 3 year contract.

Only 7 hours to kickoff :whistle:
