Hurricanes flog Crusaders in last preseason match

Julian Savea's toying with the Crusaders defence in the final minutes of the Hurricanes 74-7 Super Rugby preseason win on Friday said it all.

...

They quickly snuffed out any chance of a Crusaders victory, the Hurricanes stars instead igniting a try-fest. Loose forwards Vito and Ardie Savea were quick and strong while fullback Nehe Milner-Skudder showed he has lost nothing over the off-season , setting up two first-half tries with his pace and step.

The Crusaders on the other hand were missing All Blacks, Kieran Read, Israel Dagg, Ryan Crotty and Luke Romano and it showed. Richie Mo'unga got the start at first five-eighth, but saw his backline routinely penetrated, while the pack in front of him struggled to gain parity. A complete change of Crusaders front row had some impact at scrum time in the second half. Owen Franks, Ben Funnell and Wyatt Crockett dominated several set pieces, but it made no difference as further out the Hurricanes half-back and first five-eighth combination of TJ Perenara and Beauden Barrett set loose a destructive back-line.

Even without their All Blacks it is an embarrassing loss the Crusaders had to endure. It is still a warmup so not much to read into this. Oh, the Hurricanes has suddenly become very popular with the bookies…

The Melbourne Rebels finished their preseason on a high, with a 85-0 win over Samoa.

Thirteen unanswered tries to the Rebels gave Melbourne a convincing win to finish their preseason.

...

Rebels coach Tony McGahan said they wouldn't be getting too carried away by the scoreline, a stark contrast to their opening 59-7 loss to the Blues a fortnight ago.

"Two weeks ago we got absolutely hosed so we picked out good things there, picked out things we need to work on and this will be much the same," he said.

"(We've had) Two ends of the spectrum for the trials but most importantly we're getting combinations together."

Yeah well, Samoa A... more like Samoa F. I don't think that they have a ready squad at the moment as near everyone are currently playing in England/Europe.

Yeah, this.

The Hurricanes lost to the Blues last week, 40 - 12.

It's about giving your whole squad a run, seeing what works, what doesn't etc.

That said, the Crusaders are pinning a lot of hope on inexperienced people this season. Mo'unga is talented, but will need guidance.

Boots and All kicked into touch

SuperSport’s own rugby revamp will take place this week with long-standing Boots and All making way for two-part TMO and Phaka, a show dedicated to celebrating black rugby, making its bow.

TMO, a half-hour show on Tuesday and Thursday nights (19:00, SS1), begins this week and will kick off with a review show, followed two days later by a preview of the weekend’s action.

Boots and All, which ran to almost 1 000 episodes over exactly 20 years, has been packed away in the name of progress, although the show’s stalwarts remain.

Familiar analysts like Nick Mallett, Naas Botha, Bobby Skinstad, Ashwin Willemse and Breyton Paulse will continue to offer their insights.

Xola Ntshinga will host Tuesday’s TMO while Thursday’s TMO will be hosted by Elma Smit, who will throw things forward to weekend action.

Top guests will continue to do duty in both shows.

“Boots and All was a wonderful programme for a long time,” explained Louwrens Rensburg, SuperSport’s executive rugby producer.

“But the immediacy of news and the nature of social media made us question the relevance of reviewing rugby on a Thursday, many days after the action. We’re moving with the times and looking for something fresh and exciting.”

Part of the rugby overhaul is the introduction of Phaka, a Xhosa term for “dish up” (as in rugby).

Kaunda Ntunja, the first black captain of SA Schoolboys and a prominent isiXhosa commentator, will host the show in partnership with Makhaya Jack, one of the patriarchs of black rugby.

Phaka debuts on Tuesday (18:00, SS1) and will also feature on SS Select (channel 210, Tuesday 22:30) and SS4 (Wednesday, 05:00 and Thursday, 17:10).

TMO sounds good, nothing wrong with a revamp and this sounds pretty good with one show looking back and one looking forward.

But yeah, I wonder when will they start a football show for white people?

I for one won't be watching Phaka.
I don't need a show telling me how lucky Naas Botha, Danie Gerber, Carel du Plessis etc etc were to play international rugby and if it wasn't for apartheid they wouldn't have featured at all.
