Official Super Rugby Thread 2012

Blows my mind how often South African teams can the rough end of the ref's whistle.

Scrums have become more of a lottery then they were last season!!! Incredibly sad to see, but the sport seems to be going backwards, with the refs being brought into it more and more every season!!!

And in so doing, they hold the outcome of some games in there hands. Pity.

Stupid fan. Hope he gets banned from all rugby stadiums!

Well handled by the Bulls though. He was immediately arrested and a case of assault has been laid against him.

Hopefully the charge sticks and he gets banned from rugby for life.

What the hell was he trying to do?

After the final Bjorn Basson try the guy jumped the fence. He then threw a bottle at Keven Mealamu which struck him in the head. Mealamu took exception and went over to tell the guy to ef-off.

Guy was probably sloshed and was a bit angry about that final shoulder charge from Rene Ranger on Basson.

I was very surprised to see this morning that our photos of the incident made it onto the front page of two newspapers. Beeld and Pretoria News.

All the other photographers already packed up and our photographer and my friend Anton Geyser snapped the only images of the hooligan. So proud of him.

+1. I think they should have left him alone with Keven for 10 minutes :D

TWO THINGS:

(1) Idiot wearing blue

You will notice how I have not call this prick a fan. If you are a fan of rugby, no matter how dedicated and vociferous, your place is on the crowded side of the fence. I am indeed one of the so-called Loftus Faithful. While I cannot get there as often as I would like to of late, I do still make every effort to take in a stadium visit whenever I am able to. Despite being a Loftus faithful, I have said time and again that Kings Park is my favourite venue because the atmosphere is fantastic and the supporters are just that - SUPPORTERS!

I do recognise that some hooliganism does happen everywhere including at Loftus and have myself witnessed someone throwing a plastic bottle. We were on the upper east stand and I sent an SMS to the redline to have the perp taken care of. Security arrived and while the offender could not be positively IDed, the behaviour stopped.

I find it sad that such a situation needs to exist in this day and age and these pricks that do this need to be dealt with swiftly because they are ruining the experience for SUPPORTERS like myself.

If you get angry at the game, sign up to an internet community and vent - like many of us here do on a weekly basis. DO NOT THROW YOUR FKN TOYS!

I hope that Loftus management reflect properly on this incident and avoiding punishing the masses for the conduct of one.

(2) Match Officials

We all make mistakes. Refs included. I have said time and again (like many others here) that a team should establish a commanding lead (two scores or more) before they can take issue with refereeing. A bad decision can go against a team at any time and if that decision changes the outcome, then the real tragedy is that a commanding lead was not held.

In the Cheetahs game, a commanding lead was established and still the game was taken away from them by poor official conduct to some degree.

I have made it clear on more than one occasion that the sharks are my least favourite SA team and that I will only ever want them to win when they play NZ/Oz opposition. Except the chiefs - I like the chiefs.

However, a poor match official whose command of the game is so outstandingly bad that he ruins the game and becomes the most-talk-about feature of the clash (yes, you Bryce) not only ruins the hollow victory for the favoured side but he also cheats the oppressed. No, not the losing team, the oppressed fans who enjoy an honest game over a gifted ball of crap.

I wish there was some way of correcting this problem but to be honest, I have not seen a decent workable solution yet.

Ja - I saw the Beeld and the byline. Very nice one. Pta news is not in Joburg cafes

Cape Town - Springbok centre Juan de Jongh has signed a contract extension and will remain in the Cape until the end of 2015.

Die Burger reports that De Jongh, who was originally contracted until the end of 2012, will stay on at the Stormers and Western Province for a further three years.

Another Springbok, Gio Aplon, is also expected to remain at the Cape Town-based union.

The Stormers began the year on an uncertain note with director of rugby Rassie Erasmus announcing his resignation.

Nevertheless, they have since locked head coach Allister Coetzee into a three-year contract extension and recently confirmed that the promising quartet of Eben Etzebeth, Siya Kolisi, Frans Malherbe and Steven Kitshoff will remain at the union until the end of 2015.

Good news for the WP / Stormers. All of those are great young talents and could only be seen as a sign of the WP admin getting their heads on right.

http://www.sport24.co.za/Rugby/Super15/Bulls-deserved-a-penalty-Bray-20120313

Johannesburg - The Bulls were right to ask for a penalty on the halfway line after their winger Bjorn Basson was hurt in an incident of foul play at the end of their 29-23 loss against the Blues at Loftus Versfeld on Saturday.

SANZAR referees boss Lyndon Bray has admitted that referee Steve Walsh “got it wrong” when he refused Bulls captain Pierre Spies’ pleas to award the penalty after the game.

Basson scored in the 79th minute of the game, and as he went over Blues winger Rene Ranger hit him illegally in attempting to stop him, an incident which earned Ranger a yellow card and a citing. The citing was later deemed to be a red card, and Ranger was sentenced to a two week ban by a SANZAR disciplinary tribunal for the incident.

But when it happened, Spies asked rightly for the penalty on the halfway line, the right call after a yellow card was awarded for foul play. Walsh refused, citing the time on the clock, which had expired.

This is silly. Yes he (the ref) made a mistake, by not giving the penalty on the middle line but with the way that Morne was kicking the bulls might still have lost even IF they had scored (which was also not all that likely).

FFS get over it and move on, the Bulls were for 60 minutes not the better team on the field

BUT/MAAR what about the following scenario (if this was a viable option):

What IF they took a tap and go...and managed to score a try...and convert....
Interesting, interesting.

Like I said: a) Highly unlikely that they would have scored, b) highly unlikely that steyn would have converted it with his poor kicking on the night even IF they had scored.

FFS take the loss like a man, report the ref for not knowing the laws of rugby and move the fsck on.

Ps. I am a bulls supporter.

Make no mistake, I was happy with what happened (Stormers supporter here), because this means that Ranger won't be facing us. Let's face it, when that man comes to the party he's a pretty tough customer for ANY team! :D

I'm just SAYING. However UNLIKELY it was, in all fairness to the game, it shouldn't have happened like that...IMO.

Haha, agreed but that is why I believe their should be a "ref score card" brought in. Steve Walsh should ahve lost his match fees and be "banched" for a game as not knowing the laws of rugby for a ref is a cardinal sin imo.

I am just sick of people complaining for days / weeks afterwards. Shlt happens, deal with it :D

Yeah, agreed.

*puts big black wig back on and continues armless-shoulder-dive-dance* :p

(Apologies Bulls supporters...just HAD to. I know I'll probably get some of my own back when the Stormers choke somewhere -as they're BOUND to :erm: )

Sounds like you've been infiltrated by Sharks fanbois...

Steyn was rather bad, his family problems must be getting to him.
Would get to me if I was in his shoes.
