Official Super Rugby Thread 2012

Congrats to the Stormers. Bulls in the end beating themselves through making too many 'basic' mistakes and running into the brick wall that is the stormers defence.

Can see the bulls are missing the senior players when it comes to the build up for a try.

Even though I am a bulls fan I do hope the stormers get most of their injured players back as their style of play will keep taking it's toll if their players can not be rotated.

And yet HM picks them all in his Bok squad????

Ja Hienie, you're going to pick on form hey. What a joke.

I think it was in retaliation for what happened when Lambie lined up his first kick.

Regardless of the teams playing, I think it is disgraceful and totally disgusting to boo or point lasers, etc. at goal-kickers when they are taking their kicks.

I sincerely hope that it does not happen when the Boks are playing.

Agreed. Was glad to hear Skinstad also say how it happens at all the stadiums, and how they strongly disapprove of it.

At least the poor Schmucks supporters will have lots of time for braaing now, and getting even porkier.

Wasn't it disgusting how those uncivilized schmucks were booing every time Jantjies tried to take a kick.
Bladdy people have no respect for the game.

At Loftus last night, the announcer told the stormers fans that we had a tradition at Loftus of NOT booing and he would appreciate it if they brought that tradition back. The crowd was reminded not to boo for the first few kicks. One cnut near me was booing and I was half-tempted to SMS his seat so they could escort him out.

Shttty game, great day out.

Wow, very sophisticated seats at Loftus! :p

Yeah, I hate the booing. Quite embarrassing when attending the games at Newlands - although I never actually see who is booing around me. Probably the cheap standing areas.

Kindly don't lump us all together with uncultured swine.

Some of us are perfectly reasonable rugby fans.

Something like that: they have a rotating banner that reads along the lines of reporting violence/racism/being an AH! by SMSing the seat number in question. They get the SMS, they send security to fix the problem.

EDIT: AH! is now a banned word, it would appear, but once read arsehole but ASS instead of arse

A full strengh Bulls at fortress Loftus cannot even beat a depleted Stormers team that had 8 players out of their first team. Kolisi started his career like Schalk with a bang. Hopefully Kolisi can continue the way he has playing and can get the player of the season maybe. Meyer had too many Heinekens when he picked the team. this is the worst team selection i have ever seen and making statements like these where he contradicts himself.

I would have loved to go with a more experienced squad but I have gone with players who have a desire to play for their country and who have shown in Super Rugby that they won’t stand back. These are the form players and I am proud of them.

“This is a team that can play winning test rugby – brutal defence, big forwards running at each other, tactical kicking and direct rugby. This team can play to our typical South African strengths and the side that plays best to their pattern is normally the one that wins.

"I wanted to start the season with an experienced squad to face England, who are a good, tough side, but injuries have made this difficult," Meyer said.

Meyer said while he would have just five days to prepare the squad for the first test against England, he didn’t want excuses.

“I wanted guys who want to play for the Boks. Today was brutal out here, and I think they have the makings of a great team and squad and I have a lot of confidence in them.

In explaining the omission of De Jongh and Aplon, Meyer said Engelbrecht had been earmarked as a star of the future.

“Jean de Villiers is playing brilliant rugby at the moment, and JP Pietersen impressed as a possible back-up at 13. We could have gone with an experienced guy or a guy for the future and JJ is a brilliant winger who can develop into a world-class outside centre. He has great attributes.

“He is a guy who is in the squad so we can work with him. As for Gio, there are a lot of great players with different strengths, but the four wingers I have chosen I feel are the best at this stage, and in Pat (Lambie) and Zane (Kirchner) I feel I have the two best fullbacks there.

you tell me that no SA rugby player wants to play for their country?huh! did i miss something Meyer. guess he is already saying we playing the Bulls style rugby where the Stormers worked out the Bulls game. Meyer is looking down the barrell already where his head will be on the block for his strange team selection. why is he saying that JJ Engelbrecht is yound and talented that he wants to mould for the future. Is Juan De Jongh not a youngster still at the age of 25 and he has proven himself at the highest level already. he should have been a formality decision to pivk him for centre. he also says that there is better players then Aplon. Zane Kirchner better then Aplon. huh.WTF has Meyer been smoking.

we might as well have kept the PDivie. I doubt Meyer will last that long. Stormers players that should have been selected. Pietersen, Aplon, Habana, de Villiers, de Jongh,Grant, Ryno Elstadt, Etzebeth

Someones gran could don a lumo pink outfit and not only look better than Kirchner but play him into the ground too .......

Sharks and Bulls players that should not be there and some Breezers that should - it's only going to hurt us in our internationals by having people missing and I truly am worried about our chances :/

When it comes to the Boks, fsck provincial BS, the in form, best guys need to play. It's as easy as that.

To defend Meyer.

The guy has very little time to get a team together.

He is choosing entire combinations of backline/forwards who are already gelling to minimise the amount of work he has to do to get a cohesive team going.

Give him some time for when he has an opportunity to mix and match players.

I get what you saying and for the most part he has but he should have selected Jean de Villiers and Juan De Jongh at centre in that case.

He has gone with the entire Sharks loose trio which makes a lot of sense and perhaps including Kanko is in an attempt to continue that common thread, same I guess could be said about including Jano Vermaak who has played extensively with Elton Jantjies too, the 2nd flyhalf in the squad.

You make a good point BLS.

With only a week to prepare, settled combinations are imperative for continuity on match day.

Perhaps we need to blame the administrators who've scheduled these fixtures rather than the coach himself...

Mmmmm, from a Stormers perspective you could argue that he should have selected Grant, Jean, Juan, Gio, Brian and whoever else at scrumhalf and right wing... I think this is where most folk have a problem. Considering the Stormers are 1st in the SA Super 15 conference how does he justify the inclusion of only 3 of their players??

Just heard from a source that he is 'justifying' his selection of only 3 Stormers by saying they are 1st in Conference and he doesn't want to damage their chances of winning the trophy.

:wtf: That, if true, is wrong on so many levels. Surely the guys from the Cape playing well want to play for their country? Is this the Cape rugby administration 'playing god' and denying their players representation? Weird situation whatever the case may be.

Quite a diplomatic answer from Meyer but quite ridiculous if that were the case.

What about the Bulls chances of winning the trophy?

This.
We all may have our rivalries on provincial/Super level, but when it comes to the Boks we stand as one.

+1. I will wait and see. Meyer knows that he will have to answer if things go truelly terrible.

My starting 15:

1. Beast
2. Bismark
3. Jannie (Not because he is the best but because it keeps the Combination)
4. Etzebeth
5. Juandre Kruger
6. Marcel
7. Alberts / Daniels
8. Spies
9. Hougie
10. Steyn
11. Habanna
12. Steyn
13. JdV
14. Mvovo/ JP (I like Mvovo better as he is a true wing but JP's experience should see him get the spot)
15. Lambie

Do not care how you spin it. That is a good team.

Yeah it is. Wouldn't mind seeing your bench though. Remember how PDV poor use of the bench almost cost us against the Lions?

One player whom is an absolute legend but has fallen from grace since his injury is Pierre Spies. I remember how gutted I was when news that he wouldn't be going to the 2007 world cup broke. You can say what you want but that is a guy playing, at most, to 70% of his ability. There is no ways he can dodge the disease inherited from his father, pulmonary embolism. Chances are he is currently on (and will be for the rest of his life) blood thinning medication. He could theoretically bleed out from a cut or a broken nose incurred while playing.

I know a guy who has the same condition, his diagnosis completely changed his life. A simple nose bleed could end him. This is a hands on, physical guy, 6.4 body builder and health shop owner, completely changed the way he has to live his life now.
