Official Thread: Samsung Galaxy S (I9000)

A quick question for all you users: Every time I read this thread it's about applying lagfixes and rooting etc etc. I'm not keen to void the warranty on the phone to apply fixes for everything. Are there any of you that are using your Galaxy S just as is...? How fast/slow is it unaltered...?

I want to get this phone beginning of Jan but not if it's gonna take all this fiddling to get it to work properly.... (I don't mind the fiddling too much at all but not at the expense of the phones warranty--at least not initially)

Even without Rooting and Flashing the Galaxy S running Eclair is still a great piece of kit. To my mind, there are two primary software 'niggles' (not show stoppers) with the Galaxy and Eclair, erratic GPS and Lag. Both of these are much improved in the official Samsung Froyo release, but it is not due out in ZA before the end of the year (supposedly), so if you get the phone in Jan it might come pre-installed. If not, it will still require a flash (not a root), but it can be done via the standard client software (Kies) and should not void your warranty at all.

Kies is not a great piece of client side software, if you are not running XP, Vista or Windows 7 you are not going to be able to talk to your phone (MAC, Linux, and other versions of Windows are not supported).

If you want a camera flash, this phone does not have one.

If you want to access paid apps on the Android store you will have to root your phone no matter what make it is, as the Android App Market is not available in South Africa, and Market Enabler requires Root access to the phone. Some other, very useful applications require root access (Titanium Backup being one).

If the lag, gps and camera flash niggles are an issue for you, rather go for the HTC Desire HD, it will probably be generally available by January.

Hope this helps.

Even before I applied all the tweeks, it was still the best phone I've ever used.

But after the tweeks... WOW! Even better. It's crazy how much of a difference all the tweeks make.

I flashed a day after I got my phone :)

Agreed on both points. This is by far the best phone I have ever owned too, and even without the tweaks it is awesome. It took me a lot longer to flash and root though, and I did a lot of research before I started because I was very worried about bricking the device. But as it turns out that was a lot easier than expected, but still recommend doing a bit of reading if you decide to go that route.

Thanks a lot for the input guys. Very much appreciated. I could handle the lags etc but the not having access to paid apps could be quite problematic.

Paid applications in the Android App Store are not a function specific to the device, you will have the same problem with any device you purchase that runs any version of Android OS in South Africa. To run Market Enabler (and other useful applications) you will have to Root and thus lose your warranty with your mobile service provider, and possibly the device provider as well.

A number of app vendors will allow you to buy their apps on their own sites via PayPal or similar, but generally this does not seem to be the case. If you look well, you can find the paid app as a download from non-vendor sites, but then you open yourself up to all sorts of possible abuse.

Unfortunately we are in a catch-33 situation here in this regard, and there are other countries that are in the same situation. We are being held ransom by the providers of the device, the providers of the CELL service and the providers of the OS and none really care about the consumer (Google might, but I shall reserve judgement on that for the moment, once again).

At least Droid allows some respite due to it's design and all those intrepid developers out there for whom I am very grateful for.

It would appear, internationally, even if you void your warranty will your CELL provider, the warranty might still be valid with the Device Provider. None of this has been tested in court, or gone through any kind of Ombudsman adjudication as far as I can tell, but for a young OS, that is to be expected. Still, there is a lot of promise here.

It will be interesting to see how this all plays out.

Can anyone tell me why I receive my Google talk offline messages as emails instead of normal gtalk messages?? Its really frustrating!

That's because you loaded the incorrect packages. Those are only for JPO/JPA not JP8. Rather use this addon package http://www.multiupload.com/Z525U7FIE0.

But don't get hung about packages as you can download literally thousands from the market in anycase.

Yeah, my bad. I did actually do the correct packages, (JPO rom and JPO packages) but i somehow screwed the whole thing up really bad... it wouldn't boot past the logo, just got a blank screen with 1 vibration, then 2 vibrations ad infinitem. Fortunately i did the 3 button fix before hand so i just dug around and found a original eclair firmware, flashed it with Odin, and things *kinda* came right... except i was having issues with the CWM tool where it was bitching about my CSC. I think the ULF tool corrupted my system so i reflashed stock eclair with Odin this time using PDA, MODEM and multi CSC. Things came 100% right so i reloaded CWM and installed Darky's Legendary Steel Edition 4.1 with Voodoo lag fix. Everything is now working perfectly :) quite a nice firmware with lots of features without sacrificing speed. I am quite impressed with how easy it is to recover if you have the 3 button fix installed.

I did the official Samsung beta froyo update and mine works fine. And I had no major speed problems before the update though. Some people just like fiddling I guess, there's no reason to root the phone or do anything else to it that will void the warranty.

I must have missed something...how do u do that?

If you flashed V8 of Doc's JPO/JPA ROM, you should've read the nice, red instructions about installing the K9a Version of Hardcore's kernel first before attempting to flash the ROM. I went through the same and luckily I still had a 7.6.2 ROM on my phone to flash via CWM. After reverting back and flashing the K9a kernel and THEN flashing the V8 JPO ROM, everything's been as expected. I must say, the ROM really is fast and stable - much more so than 7.5 / 7.6.

Issit worth Flashing to 8 if I'm still on 7.6? Or should I rather wait a month for Gingerbread?

I don't want to set up everything again :(

You can upgrade to the Samsung release (JPO) version of Froyo doing a registry hack and using Kies by following traiviet's fail-safe method mentioned here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=809423&page=40

Try this method. It worked for me each time i connected to Kies.

1- If you're updated to the newest version of Kies, UNINSTALL it and download and install the older version instead. I used Kies_1.5.3.10093_82
2- Open Kies, plug in your device and let Kies recognize it.
3- Click on UPGRADE. Kies will deny the upgrade. Click CANCEL BUT DO NOT CLOSE KIES.
4- Open Regedit and edit the followings

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Samsung\Kies\]
"LocalVer"="1.5.3.10103.100"
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Samsung\Kies\DeviceDB\N *]
"SoftwareRevision"="I9000XXJF3/I9000OXAJF3/I9000XXJF3/I9000XXJF3"
"ProductCode"="GT-I9000HKDXEU" **
"HIDSWVER"="" ***
"DEVCONINFO"="" ***

* N is a number from 1 to 4 in your Regedit that has the SoftwareRevision and ProductCode info.
** If your ProductCode ends with XEU or XEE, your device will be upgraded to JPO or JPA respectively.
*** Make sure you delete whatever is in HIDSWVER and DEVCONINFO.

5- Close Regedit and Click on UPGRADE again. Kies will upgrade your device in 20 minutes depending on how fast your Broadband is.

The older version of Kies can be found here: http://downloadcenter.samsung.com/content/SW/201010/20101018115930500/Kies_1.5.3.10093_82.exe

Just make sure you can do the three button reset thing before you start and remove any lag-fixes you may already have applied. If you have rooted, I don't think you need to un-root, but it might be worthwhile doing so anyway. Also, if you are using another desktop on your phone (like LaucherPro), switch back to the Samsung desktop.

A number of my desktop icons disappeared after the update, but other than that all my data remained in tact from Eclair to Froyo.

Yeah, i saw that when i went back to see why things went so wrong :) Dunno why i missed it the first time..... i often tend to skim read the posts until i get to installation instructions! Everything worked out in the end so it's all good.

I need a dock for my SGS. One that sticks on my windscreen like the GPS holders. Also, how does one get "maps" to stay on while driving. The screen keeps blacking out and locking.

Looks good but I reckon one could drive themselves mad keeping up with the latest ROM. That Doc Froyo thread at XDA is just too much.

I'm on BUJP8 v9.0.1 and it's very sweet.

No, But now after reading all the features I feel like flashing again, from DoC froyo

Colleague flashed it this morning. The new font and animations look pretty sweet. I'm happy to stick to XXJPO v8 for now. I mean, I've only been running it since last week Friday... :D
