Official Vodacom Smart Kicka thread

I've been wondering about exposing the parents to the world of smart phones. This looks like a worthwhile gamble.

:D my dad has an android phone, the only thing he uses is it for is the hotspot/tethering functionality (shares internet to his laptop - phone stands in a corner because of bad reception) for which I've made a toggle icon on the home screen - whenever he toggles it he refers to it as "turning the android on".

Gets shotgun and starts firing :P Congratulations dude :)

Well rouxenator was kind enough to include his cell number and offered free support for the folks, so the deal was impossible to pass up. :D

I unpacked this last night and fired it up without a SIM and attached it to my wifi. I must say for just over R500, this certainly isn't a bad phone at all. The touch screen is good and, oh so importantly, the OS response is great.

Being a branded phone it comes with the a pile of vodacom spam apps, but I could uninstall those. I didn't have to sign into google to get it going (IIRC Nexus 7 forced you to login?).

I think this will be a good way to get someone (like my folks) exposed to a smart phone and if it doesn't work out it didn't break the bank.

Using this for a while to see if it's Granny suitable and it runs just fine.
Was a little slow to boot but after removing the bloat and multiple home-screens it's OK.

Screen isn't as responsive as the more expensive phones but it's R550.

I like the Smart Kicka. It's pretty responsive an smooth for the price. There are also lots of great 2D games which it runs very well. Could probably even manage small 3D games like Can Knockdown etc, but I haven't tried. Camera is crap though. It also feels pretty hollow for some reason and voice calls reverberate like crazy as a result. Having said that voice is pretty clear on this phone.

Amongst the MTN Steppa, Alcatel Onetouch Pixi and Huawei Y220, the Smart Kicka is miles ahead.

Is it possible to switch off 3G to save battery ? ie I only need 2G, as I can use my WIFI for data downloads

Hi,
Sorry for the thread necro.
I just wanted to give my experience as well, my mother had the Steppa (bought her a Gobii this week) and my dad has the Kicka.
What i can tell you is the Steppa is superior to the Kicka, it only has one core and android 2.3, but its a much more enjoyable experience working on the Steppa that the Kicka, my dad actually took the Steppa as he says he cannot work on that kicka anymore.
The touch screen on the Kicka is in all honesty pathetic, you cant scroll through contacts or Facebook since it "selects" randomly the whole time. The phone also has a very cheap feeling to it (yeah i know, its 550), but the Steppa feels like a much more expensive and solid device.

The Steppa's touch screen is even superior to the Gobii.
Just a shame its Android 2.3 and the resolution really sucks.
