Official Vodacom Smart Kicka thread

Battery time an issue

+1 love mine.

After my initial enthusiasm for this phone, I must say I find the following very annoying:

Battery time is about 5.5 hours (5.18wH) due to the 1400mAh battery (TLi014A1) same battery as the Alcatel One Touch.

Any upgrade options available for the battery?

Have not succeeded in rooting.

l think for my missus's use it's more than adequate. Good learning platform to get off Symbian. Vodacom's skinning leaves a lot to be desired (would love to get rid of their rubbish, but rooting certainly does not look as though it will happen).

Something I really like is that an SD card is treated like user memory (ala Android v 2, not the way current Google/vendor's implementations of Android works).

What I am really disappointed with is the lack of GPS. You can't believe how many apps sneak GPS into their requirements to install.

Battery life is certainly not as bad as you mention on this side. With updating of her address book we had a horrific drop down to 40%, but since then it's been flatlining. It's now sitting on 35% after 8.5h which includes trying to get rid of 500 free SMSes and responding to WhatsApp.

I am really getting irritated by apps that won't install - the latest is google keep. Why on earth would a note/list taking app need gps support?

Getting phenomenal battery life.

WiFi, 3G both on, done downloads for sideloading, bluetooth to transfer data, been trying out the sideloaded apps.

(Must say how impressed I am with devs who sent me the apks of their apps when I told them Google Play wouldn't let me install them).

I improved the battery time by turning down the screen brightness. You can also turn off bluetooth.

However I am running into an extremely annoying network problem. This is now the second time this has happened. No service. Network settings are greyed out. Had to factory reset the phone the first time it happened. Now its happened again. Wondering if anyone else has this problem?

SOLUTION: power down phone. Take out sim. Start phone. Switch off again. Place sim back in phone. Restart. Open dialer. Phone will report that airplane mode is enabled, switch mode. This is obviously a bug, since airplane mode was not turned on to begin with and toggling it achieved nothing.

I'm trying to root my VF685 with Vroot/iRoot, but not having any luck:

With the phone connected to my PC, the software would download something for a while, install something and then reboot the phone. The notification about what is being installed flashes by so quickly before it reboots, I'm unable to see what is actually being installed.
After downloading/installing/rebooting a couple of times the software gives up with a notification about the phone being a hard nut to crack or something like that.

Has anyone managed to successfully root this phone?

Well since the Smart Kicka is an Alcatel made phone, I looked for a phone similar to it. I found the Alcatel Pop D1, looked for its custom recovery, found one, flashed it to the Kicka with Flash Tools. When that was successful I then flashed SuperSu with the custom recovery (CWM). Root access granted.

where can i get a cover for a smart kicka?
anything local that has a reasonable fit?

Root Vodacom Smart Kicka

This guide will help you root your Vodacom Smart Kicka. I'll try to be as clear as possible.

1st off make sure “USB debugging” and “Unknown Sources” is enabled.

For USB debugging go to Settings > About Phone scroll down to “Build Number” tap is several times until you see a message stating you are now a developer. Press back scroll down to “Developer Options” open it and check if USB Debugging is ticked, if it’s not tick it.

For Unknown Sources go to Settings > Security > Scroll down and tick Unknown Sources.

Next USB Drives and Vcom drivers need to be installed. For USB Drivers search for Universal ADB drivers on Google also Alcatel USB Drivers just to be safe.
For Vcom Drivers visit this link http://thebroodle.com/microsoft/win...tk65xx-preloader-usb-vcom-drivers-in-windows/ install everything then reboot your PC.

Next place UPDATE-SuperSU-v2.45.zip on the root of your SD card/Internal memory (place on both directories just to be safe). Visit this link to download the file http://download.chainfire.eu/695/SuperSU/

Next use Google to find and download MTK Droid Tools v2.5.3 and Smartphone Flash Tools v5. Unzip/install both programmes. Run MTK Droid Tools, connect your phone to your PC now wait a few seconds until you see information about your phone displayed by MTK Droid Tools. Now click on “blocks map” then click on “Create scatter file” next select a directory you want to save it on, to avoid confusion lets save it on the desktop. Close MTK Droid Tools we are done with it now.

Next download the custom recovery (TRWP) I made for the Smart Kicka using Easy Magic TRWP. This is the link to the file http://www75.zippyshare.com/v/8ncUfF5m/file.html once downloaded place it on your desktop where the scatter file is. (It’s important for the scatter file and the recovery to be in the same directory)
Now run Flash Tools, select the “Download” Tab click on “Scatter- Loading” then locate the scatter file we made and placed on the desktop. Once it is loaded only “RECOVERY” should be ticked on the list of items displayed on Flash tools.

Now disconnect your phone from your PC and switch it off. Click on the “Download” button on Flash Tools with the green arrow pointing downwards. Connect your phone and after a few seconds you should see a yellow bar and a percentage counter. If all goes well you should see a big green tick. Now we have a custom recovery. Disconnect the phone then press and hold simultaneously the power and volume up button until you see “Powered By Android” then let go. If the recovery was successfully flashed you should see a blue “Team Win” splash. Now click on “install”, navigate to UPDATE-SuperSU-v2.45.zip you placed on the root of the SD card/internal Memory and flash it. All you have to do now is reboot your device (Reboot to System) and you should have root.

If you encounter problems post them on this thread or pm me.

Hi there

Thanks so much for the reply

When i click on download i get an error
PMT has changed for this rom; It must be downloaded

Will do some research, but not sure how to fix it.

If you could perhaps help it would be apriciated.
Thank you in advance

That problem is caused by the scatter file. To fix it try the latest version of MTK Droid Tools.

Edit: I made an error in my post it should v2.5.3 of MTK Droid Tools.
