Official Vox DSL feedback thread

Nimz, your router probably has open ports to the world. What happens is, on other ISP accounts these dont get attacked, but on VOX they probably get attacked.

For example, dns might be open, and some bots are using it for dns amplification ddos attacks.

To fix that, check firewall settings ect. Just using another router that doesn't have the ports open, might also fix your latency issues on VOX.
I have seen this happen with other people on VOX accounts, as well as my own when I had RDP port open to the world. As soon as I firewall it off, the issues stopped.

The attack is not the issue, its the cause. The issue is, the attack causes your router to flood your upload on the DSL line, causing massive latency, and slow download speeds.
Thanks bud, will look into it tomorrow.

Very good point.

Thank goodness we have such a knowledgable community here - when I first installed the Mikrotik, that was the first thing I got advice on.

That's an interesting theory, but why Vox and not other ISPs?

Completely random.

VOX'S IP just maybe happen to be port scanned more often than other ISPs.
Or other ISPs may have more IPs, so takes longer to port scan them ect.

It could happen on other ISPs as well.

Interesting! The firewall you're talking about is the router's firewall, I presume?

Mine is enabled so I should be fine, but will check it just in case.

Yeah most of the time devices come with a default firewall which is fine. However I have happened to see people disable all the default firewall rules on a mikrotik router for example, and the dns on it gets abused.

Glasnost: Test if your ISP is shaping your traffic
Results for your host (196-210-110-225.dynamic.isadsl.co.za - 196.210.110.225):
Is your upload traffic rate limited?

There is no indication that your ISP rate limits your uploads.

Results for your host (dsl-197-245-124-195.voxdsl.co.za - 197.245.124.195):
Are certain ports blocked for all traffic?

3 out of 3 control flow transfers on port 6881 failed to upload any data. It seems like your ISP hinders you from uploading control flow traffic on port 6881 to our test server.

3 out of 3 control flow transfers on port 45295 failed to upload any data. It seems like your ISP hinders you from uploading control flow traffic on port 45295 to our test server.

VOX Bandwidth

It would appear that Vox email notifications remain out of kilter with usage on the shiny new usage tracker on the portal.

Email:

vox1.jpg

Tracker:

vox2.jpg

Also, http downloads (big ones using multiple threads in a download manager) have become broken since this morning.

I know there were issues with bandwidth management, thought they had been fixed. Clearly not. Any update on this?

Phaedrus

PS, looks like an issue with the 100->150 gig upgrade in this instance...

Seems like the usage tracker is borked. Actual usage on my side vs the usage tracker aren't correlating.

They should be better now. I've just finished the Fatpipe audit to get everything back in order after I screwed it up at the beginning of the month.

Please keep in mind that your "zero rated data" will NOT be accurate this month. There's nothing I can do to represent this after the audit.

So what is the current state with Carry Over? When will it be fixed?

My Ticket was logged with VOX last week Sunday... I can't see how this can still only be a simple display issue?

Thanks. Seems more realistic now.

Can you tell me how long it takes for Bolt-on to be activated?

Can this guy just give it a rest or do we have to start RASing?
Getting sick of this trolling, bloating the thread.

I have 5 accounts that I'm aware of which need some extra TLC which I will be fixing tomorrow morning at the office. Please send me your DSL username and I'll have a look at your account.

Thanks. Seems more realistic now.

Bolt on gets manually added due to configuration, give support a call on Monday morning for activation. I think there's a process behind it which I'm unaware of.

I had a look at this, and have similar results, but I also notice several errors from the page, which lead me to question the validity of their test routine.

Is your upload traffic rate limited?

There is no indication that your ISP rate limits your uploads.
However, some of the measurements were affected by noise, which limits Glasnost ability to detect rate limiting.

Details:

* The measurement data is too noisy to detect whether your ISP rate limits your BitTorrent uploads. Re-running the test while ensuring that no other downloads or uploads are running in the background might fix this problem.

* There is no indication that your ISP rate limits uploads on port 6881 or 39516. In our tests, uploads on port 6881 achieved up to Kbps while uploads on port 39516 achieved up to Kbps.

I don't limit ports on the Subscriber Management platform, but there is always a possibility that ports are blocked deeper in the network. If someone is legitimately having a problem with a port then please call the support center and log a call accordingly.

We all know that BitTorrent and World of Warcraft downloader
work... both use port 6881:

Code:
http://www.speedguide.net/port.php?port=6881

I can't find what port 39516 relates to ... if someone is using this port and cannot use it, call the support center and log a call please.

Code:

We are in the business of selling bandwidth after all, why would we block the ability of using it?

I asked the question because it may be affecting my ADSL or be a related symptom. The errors do not occur on WebAfrica, so something is different on the Vox network. I'm pleased you were able to reproduce it.
