I couldn't even get Arma to run smooth on medium with my 6400 and ATi 4850

I'll be honest though. I know this sounds strange and I'm sure not everyone would have the same performance, but A2 actually runs better for me. (although I have upgraded my GPU from a 7900gt). Everything else is exactly the same though.
One major, major frame killer is viewdistance. This setting alone will impact your performance like no other. In A2 I have mine currently set at about 2.5km.

I just had another round of Arma2. Sorry marine1, to derail like this but HOLY sheet that game looks amazing! 
I took a bmp on a nice run across some of Chernarus and there's some hectic forests and scenery and it ran beautifully. Maybe the AI is where the crunch comes in but I'm blown away because I really ddin't expect it to look this good and run so well. Maybe the latest patch optimized some stuff?

I'm enjoying it, just wish the game had a better tutorial (on how to play it)
I've grasped much of the game, but they could've explained it better.
There is a game guide out for this game, was considering buying it too.

Nope, no local only server until Codemasters releases dedicated server software. It only supports P2P hosting at this point in time unfortuantely.. hopefully they'll release it soon enough.
