My girlfriend has to make a booking for some business contacts, anyways, she calls La Vierge and guess what.

La Vierge in Hermanus wants credit card details before they'll make a booking for you.

WTF!

I called this Lion park last week to get reservation information, and they emailed me a form to complete, asking for COMPLETE Credit Card details, even die CVV number...wtf x2

So they can charge a penalty if you don't pitch up for your reservation.

C'mon guys, its not rocket science.

So your going to give some random people your credit card number with the 3 digit number on the back?

I think rocket science will lose this one for stupidity.

I got a Cheque card recently so that I can also partake in these risky financial transactions...

I've had this card for 1 month and there already are four places (websites) that store my card details. I believe the bank will reimburse you (eventually) when people charge your card without providing service (i.e. stealing).

The banks moan the whole time about CC fraud - but what the hell have they done to improve CC security. Why don;t all CC require you to enter a PIN at the shops? Why only "advanced" chip CCs?

Standard practice. All the hotels that I've dealt with ask for the same thing. If you cancel last minute then they can charge you a cancellation fee etc.

If you thinks that's wtf, try this on for size. Yesterday I went to The Toy Shop in cresta, I paid using my credit card. About 20 minutes later I called my sis to let her know what I bought for my son. She bought the same thing from Reggies. R50 cheaper and a lot of extras. So I return the purchase, the guy refused to take it back and credit my credit card instead he wanted to give me a voucher that I could only use at the store. Anyway, I created a bit of a scene and called hubby. There was no disclaimer in sight. After hubby spoke to him he agreed to credit my card.

La Vierge are definitely not "random people"

There is a BIG difference between giving those details to a fly by night motel and giving those details to an established place like La Vierge...

Most 3 star and higher places require either your CC or a deposit to ensure that you meet your reservation.

Not really - scams can happen anywhere. If I recall correctly last year waiters at the Dros down the road were caught in a CC cloning scam.

Husbands are good for something eh ;)

greg, thats more the exception than the norm at "middle class" type places

If you give your CC details to the porter at BillyBobs Motel then you can expect fraud

If you give your CC to the Mount Nelson hotel you don't (could happen though of course)

Places complain when they ask people for full credit card details and people dont want to give details. Your info will be lying there openly exposed to any person who could use it for fraud. Greedy businesses.
