I think it was accepted to please the Zuma camp. Maybe they got some tip off about a PC Virus or the PC's were running on 1 bit precision. Who knows!

I remember the Zuma camp insisting on it because it was supposedly more transparent etc. I'm sure there was an ulterior motive though, unless it was just a power play.

i think its power play. I suspect if the votes were initially intended to be counted manually, the Zuma camp would have insisted on computers.

Probably. :) I wonder if Mbeki has any skeletons in his closet that can now be used by Zuma to keep himself from being charged. Wouldn't surprise me.
 
It's fairly simple. Electronic voting is almost impossible to rig.

Electronic voting has numerous problems. Different ones to those of manual counting, sure, and you'd have to weigh up the risks of each kind in this particular situation, but electronic voting is by no means bullet proof.
