Like @6spdmanual said its the smoothness and the torque, You would notice that the engine doesnt have to work has hard as a 4 cylinder thats why everyone loves the inline 6 on a BMW. The way is drive a E46 LCI inline 6 and then drive the E90 320i which was newer than the E46 and you will notice a night and day difference.It's mostly to do with smoothness, as well as low - mid range torque delivery. When you have the firing order spread out over 6 cylinders instead of 4 you can counterbalance them for a smoother engine.
