Older iMac Keyboard

Hahaha... I wonder if they could do a vinyl wrap on the keyboard and keys... :p like they do to cars ??

I do remember similar solutions being available, they however IMO were crap; basically good bye great tactile feel... Not even to mentioned wear and tear issues...

Oh well... bottles of tippex it will be then.

Hey Hey

Can anyone suggest where I can find one of the older iMac keyboards...

Family member is looking for one to replace theirs that has died.
They have tried the usual retailers, and no luck at all, not even able to order one.
I managed to find a couple on Gumtree, but both have a few dead keys.

They like the feel of the older keyboard.

I am familiar with PCs (be kind please), so Mac and such is unfamiliar to me.

Any suggestions or input most welcome.
I've got the bluetooth version and while it's a great keyboard I really do prefer the chicklet type on my macbook pro.

:D

Perhaps they just need some time with the chicklet type keyboard... not base judgement on 1st impression of demo model.

I suppose too, I could tinfoil the white base of their iMac and draw a black apple on it... so it matches the new keyboards...

I'll post you one of my spare stickers, that way you're making far less compromises ;)

It doesn't come in white... they would prefer a white one to match their iMac.

The options are as I see them;
1) get new aluminium Mac keyboard and adjust to the chicklet keys
2) get replacement old one from WantItAll / TakeALot and PayALot
3) get PC keyboard with nice tactile feel - and live with the black
4) keep an eye on eBay & Gumtree and use a PC keyboard in the interim
5) put a PC keyboard into the shell of the old iMac keyboard and hope it all works

Here's a possible one from Canada (same suggested by clasqm, thanks -- just explored a bit further and found these products):

http://matias.ca/usb2keyboard/viewer/index2.php?model=usb2&pic=3
Wantitall seems to offer this one : R692
http://www.wantitall.co.za/PC-Hardware/Matias-FK104M-USB-2-0-Keyboard-Mouse-White-Mac__B000BWI4DC

Or

http://matias.ca/tactilepro3/index.php

I'm going to be trying to see if Wantitall can source the Matias Tactile Pro 3 at a reasonable price -- weight is in the same category as the das keyboard and it's white.

Well thanks go to clasqm for providing the 1st source link; I have just sent an email to Wantitall to find out about the tactile pro 3 -- hope to have one soon ;)

If anyone has a chicklet style bluetooth keyboard and wants to trade it for the older style white one I'm game. :)

or which one do I want?

I can't pair the one I have with my iPad - it's incompatible.

Lol. Understood that (have a shiny BT Mac chiclet keyboard that never gets used), however that's not the model old Mac keyboard I would have liked (tactile feel was compromised in this model, unfortunately), but I do believe it's the one Kilobits was looking for.

/side note: Now if only someone would make an Apple equivalent of the System 36 keyboard (IMO the pinnacle of quality: solid, unbelievable tactile switch response, long lasting, and heavy)

Well for me I'm willing to pay extra for a better keyboard, but yes Wantitall really like to screw their customers for non mainstream items. I'm going to 1st consider OWC shipping to SA, before committing though.

Guess in your case you need to strike either a deal with Bwana, or consider the cheaper Matias keyboard & mouse combo I linked at R692, or order a good 2nd Apple extended II keyboard from eBay with PS2 to USB converter

That was from ImportItAll... a Wanititall clone type thing.

It just seems a little loony that a replacement keyboard can cost half the price of a new iPhone / iPad2 and a fifth of the price of a brand new iMac.

EDIT:

@bwana ... Perhaps I could suggest they get the iPad friendly chicklet one... and if they hate it... they can swap with yours ??

Ah well...

Same crap business philosophy I.e. screw the customer. Ok well I have sent an email to Wantitall and OWC; will let you know once I get a response (if you want to wait of course).

These keyboards will demand a higher price because they use higher quality components (high grade mechanical switches); and the biggest reason is most likely that they are no longer mainstream items -- I.e. most people today are quite content with the cheaper mass produced plastic crap (most likely because they have never known any better).

Btw not that I'm indirectly implying Apple's new keyboards are crap; design for me is great, materials are as always also great... Where I believe they fall down is the operational use I.e. chiclets will never have the tactile feel of a high grade mechanical switch.

I can only fairly assess the local xxxitall prices once I know what it will cost from OWC + shipping + customs tax

[)roi(] give us an update if you hear from them.

I would be interested to see the pricing.
