Should you pay on the road handling fees, registration etc for a demo model car? I wouldn't mind paying a couple hundred bucks for the transfer of registration, or even transfer it myself, but I can't justify paying +- R3500 - R5000 for all the above fees on a demo (just speaking in general.....not at any specific vehicle).

I charge R2950 which covers, carpet mats, licence, registration and a full tank of petrol. (In a used car add in the cost of a COR and anything that has to be done as a result)

From that amount we also pay the guys who do the licencing for us, and after adding it all together, it is very close to what you would pay if you did it yourself.

Anything from R3500 onward is a ripoff.

PS ~ I see that I am just down the road from you, PM me if I can help you.:)

Anyone avoided these stupid fees. Quoting a Hyundai dealer, it includes

-pre delivery inspection
-wheel alignment
-valet
-licence and registration of the vehicle.

I mean surely a new car should have it's wheels aligned and paying for a valet...what the........These fees is the only thing standing in the way of me buying a new car!

out of the above Id only pay the license and reg fees
alot of the time they wont budge though
I got a decent deal on car though, big discount and R800 for lic (red from R3500)
so didnt complain

My carpets were standard equipment ;)

How does one account for the bundle considering it is an Incl Vat charge for a service but a significant cost input is that of petrol which is Vat exempt?

Sorry for the thread necro on this one...

But I'm about to go through this process.. looking for a second hand bakkie for my folks.

CMH seems to have fees at about R5000 - R6000.... could be interesting to see what that entails, because its ridiculous.

I refused to pay them - if they don't like it, I won't buy the car. Give me the papers and I'll do it myself.

Oh, if they still have the vehicle and my old man approves of it and I start the deal, I won't pay it...

It was just amusing listening to the salesman.. 2008 bantam for about R80k, then he starts doing maths in his head and said I would have to finance about R85k - R86k if I took it. I said nothing and just continued looking, but I was having a good laugh in my head about it.

Will still be incredibly amusing to see exactly what it entails though.

If you advertise at R80,000 - don't expect me to come in and pay more than that.

Jees, I won't even pay R80k... I will be knocking 5% - 10% off before I even start thinking about saying I'll take the vehicle.

BUT, I've noticed nobody knows anything about negotiating anymore, its sad.

I didn't day I wasn't going to pay less - but there's no way I'd pay more :p

Include it in the purchase price or I take my money elsewhere.

Sorry, but you will have to do that then. R2950 includes Lic&Reg, a full tank of fuel, numberplates and carpet mats.

If you begrudge paying the guy who has to stand in the queue for you, then by all means do your own licencing, and fill up your tank and buy a set of carpets for the new car.

CMH happens to be one of our competitors, and I KNOW that I can undercut them every time when it comes to this fee - they are robbing you blind. I am happy that the 2950 covers what it should plus helps pay the guy who does the crappy job. Anything more than that is crazy.

There are many ways to include that in the price, and one of them is to decrease your discount by that amount -very simple but swings and roundabouts in the end.

Guys you keep forgetting that this is a business and certain margins and profits have to be made if you want to remain viable.

If you don't like the extra charges like this, do a private deal.

R2950 is about a 100% markup - I'd rather do it myself, or get someone to do it ;)

EDIT: And R5k on a R80k car is 6.25% of the cars value.

Really?

Do the maths.

Licence and Reg - Forester - R 825 + Tank of fuel from empty ( the cars come empty) +- R750 + Set of number plates R150, + set of embossed genuine carpet mats R950. Total R 2675 - please forgive me for "swiping" R 275 to pay the licence guy.

Ditto. You cannot in this day and age expect me to pay R5000 odd for X and not break it down for me. Give me the option(s) of doing whatever needs to be done, myself. What if I do not want a set of carpets or a full tank. Let me choose. Eg. If I ask that you "fill the tank for me please" give me a price for that alone and I'll pay for it no problems

Any reasonable salesperson will be able to give you a decent enough breakdown, as Fazda did above. You're more than welcome to pass on whatever you don't want, with the exception of licensing on a financed car. The dealership has an obligation to the banks to ensure transfer of ownership takes place, so that will be done at the dealer's cost, and you will pay for it. Whether it's explicitly specified in the breakdown is immaterial.

I have 600 for license, 400 for petrol, 150 for plates. 350 for carpets (I'm not spending a grand on carpets). Of course... you could also use an 18 wheeler in your example... and claim to be making a loss. this is a second hand bantam.
