On Self Defence.

The best move? Run away. Get fit, learn to run far and fast. In addition carry pepper spray and know how to use it. Get a small stun baton as well. A telescopic baton is a worthwhile thing to keep in your car too. Don't bother with martial arts unless you're planning to dedicate many hours a day to training and waiting some years before you are proficient. By then you'll also have learned that the best defence is running away.

I don't care how tough that big guy thought he was those three would almost certainly have ripped him to pieces. If they were gangsters I guarantee it.

It depends if you are talking about lifestyle or functional MA. A lifestyle martial art will takes years, functional is literally that, 9 months - 1 year and you would have a significant advantage
Agreed on the thugs, 1 vs 3 will almost always end badly for the single

You land a decent kick to the head and its instant lights out. Granted, I probably couldn't get that high anymore - getting old :(

I dont know about this, maybe 1 - 1 you have a chance, but on multiple attackers a high kick will prob lose you the fight, even if you land it.
I have done FC messing around, and usually the ones who try do any kind of high kicking with me end up failing.

I do MMA and agree with most of these people no matter what 3 on 1 is normaly a loss no matter what you have studied so running is the best option but if you do get caught in that situation your best hope is to seperate them leg kicks work brilliantly as some one said a kick to the thigh can make a guy limp with one shot trust me i know also straight push kicks just to get distance are beautiful, high kicks are way to risky in those scenarios also a big plus in a game like this is knowing pressure points remember its a street fight i wont even hesitate to eye guage a guys eyes or kick him right in the nuts nor would i be afraid to pick up a weapon(glass, chair, bottle etc) i do MMA as a controlled form of fighting i love it as a sport but in general i hate fighting ill normaly walk away unless you do something really wrong but even i must admit 3 - 1 i would run first

Stealth, suprise and overwhelming force, or run away. This isnt Hollywood. Take em out before they even know whats happening.

Any decent street thug will have a gun anyway and you will get pwned...

Only if the assailant is like me, and catches the leg...

A **** tried that with me at primary school (waaaay long time ago). Caught his leg, threw him to the ground, nice shoulder lock - he was crying like a baby.
A kick is only effective if, and ONLY if, you fast and accurate enough.
Still, 3 guys.... run, and run like the wind.

You must see some of the guys in the ring - you don't see that leg coming - but yeh - I was referring to one assailant - three:: pickup the smallest one and use him as a weapon :)

Ja. But that leg has to hit the right spot, otherwise ones balance is in the firing line..
The defense is a good idea. Just that also has to be pulled off right, otherwise the oke will think you groping him...

I guess it comes down to learning how to pick your fights.

I've done some takedowns and some full contact sparring over the last few years (armed - sword, knife and spear - and plain hand to hand) but never had to put it into practice (yet)... Given the scenario above, yeah, I'd run for it. One on one, I'd take my chances, even if the guy is armed with a gun and I can close on him quickly. Two on one if I have a contact weapon (I usually have a blade or two handy) and space to move (if they're not armed with firearms). More than that, sorry... as much as I don't fear death, I kinda like my life at the moment.

Speaking of fights and self-defense... can someone explain to me why the following often happens:

Typical scenario - a big guy sitting somewhere in a bar or club, minding their own business, and inevitably, some smaller guy, pissed out of his bracket or stoned, will try and pick a fight? If the big guy ignores him, the little guy gets more aggro and annoying, but if the big guy so much as twitches to react, suddenly the small guy wants to get all punch-happy and starts calling his friends over to help...

Thanks... I guess I'll have to stick to tea gardens and coffee houses from now onwards...

LOL. I guarantee you you'll have a much more peaceful time. :D
But seriously. Anywhere where there's alcohol, competition for women and young guys there'll be some standoffs. There's no avoiding it.
