The UK has that as well and on their "Freeview" option and it was set top box with a once off purchase and no monthly rental.

Well I won't pay for a set top box.

What happens if you don't watch SABC or you have DSTV....

Are they going to force us to get one....

It is all a moot point since you are going to be hard pressed to find a TV without a digital tuner builtin by 2010 since the UK and US are scheduled to be switching off their analog systems by then.

Anyway the settop would cost in the region of R300-500. My understanding is that their are going to be the normal free-to-air channels and some extra SABC channels that will be encrypted and will require a smartcard to view, similar to DSTV.

I really hope so. I can't stand those stupid tv licence radio and tv adverts that they bombard you with every year. I still would like to know where they get the "equipment thats installed in their vans that can detect unlicenced tv tuners"

Thanks - I was wondering if the box was uselessly sitting on the TV back home. I envisaged some head scratching and the decision being made not to mention it to me.
