If I sign up for Telkoms Do Broadband 3 option and i finish the Int cap, can I buy cap from another ISP and still be able to use the line? As far as I know, the line rental has been paid, so you can use as many ISPs as you can afford. I would just need to create a PPPOE connection for each one?

Also because the DO 3 is shaped, but can i purchase unshaped from other isp?

You can buy shaped or unshaped bandwidth from any ISP and then either put your ADSL router in bridging mode and create a new PPPOE connection for each or just bung the user name and password straight into the router. Being on a Do broadband account doesn't limit you to only Telkom or to shaped or unshaped data.

I would cancel the Do Broadband package, and just keep the ADSL line with Telkom. Then get a 1GB account with Afrihost at R29. Then when the one GB is finished, topup with Afrihost, either at R29 or if you are lucky at R14.50 per GB. I've done this before. 1GB at R29 + 10GB at R145. That's R174 for 11GB. No way Telkom can beat that! And Afrihost's topup at half price of R14.50 is becoming very common. It is there almost everytime I log in to top up. In fact it's available right now!

thanks alot for the reminder. i just got 2GB for R29!!!

OP, your line rental consists of telephone and ADSL rental amounts. what speed line r u on?

I have squat at present, but i/m goona do the telkom closer thing for the free install, then cancel. Then Do level 3. but if a cancel level 3, i have no line rental. so how does that help? For R554 i get 4meg line, 5gb int and 30gb local. thats is not a bad deal imho.

remember the to add R140 something fee for your telephone line rental aswell. 544 + 140

Will you actually be using the 30GB local-only? If you are, then maybe Do 3 will suite you fine. Personally, 30GB local-only is totally useless for me - most of my traffic is international, and I don't want to stuff around with router settings or PPPOE accounts everytime my cap runs out, or do traffic splitting on the router/dedicated box. I hate local-only! With Afrihost its quite simple. One account, configure your router once, and top-up as you need at the cheapest prices available.

Besides, I'd rather support the competition than Telkom, who are doing squat to bring us cheaper broadband, while Afrihost have ignited a broadband revolution that is starting to burn brighter with every week that passes.

True. but what will afrihost cost me incl line rental?

i believe it's the same price for rental. u save huge on bandwidth costs.

Give them a call. they pretty helpful. otherwise sms help to 32541 and they will call you.

Afrihost Option 1
11GB Afrihost = R174 ( (R29 x 1) + (R14.50 x 10 at special topup price) )
4mbps Line rental = R413
TOTAL = R587.

Afrihost Option 2
5GB Afrihost = R145 ( R29 x 5, special topup price of R14.50 not taken into account )
4mbps Line rental = R413
TOTAL = R558

DO 3
5 GB international + 30GB almost useless local + 4mbps line rental
TOTAL = R554

So if you exclude Afrihosts special topup price of R14.50, and you exclude Telkom's 30 GB local-only, the difference is R4 in Telkom's favour for a 5GB account.

Now with Telkom, the topup price is R65 per GB. With Afrihost the max it will ever be is R29, but it is nowadays more often than not R14.50.

C'mon, show a little support for Afrihost. They are doing wonders. Telkom still wants you to bend over and give you in the ass at R65 per GB. Would you like some vaseline, or are you gonna sign up with Afrihost?

They don't incl lines, only data.

So if i'm correct then in my understanding, R290 for a 10GB from afrihost and R413 for line. No other hidden costs? Other than the line install? Does that 413 incl the R140?

check if they have a special onthe closer option where you dont pay for the line install. also remember to take the self-install on the router if you need one.

Ja, I know abt the closer thing, free install then cancel. What then? Is that where the self install happens?

Also, with afrihost, what happens to unused data, lose it or carry over?

u must tell them u wann do the self install when signing up. after the tech does the line install, u install the router, filter etc.

no carry over. thats why you buy per gig and top up when necessary. use a pre-paid option on the last few days if necessary.

line rental is R131 for telkom line not including adsl rental
:)

@Densweep - voice line rental was excluded from my examples. In both cases (Afrihost and Telkom DO 3), your voice line rental is paid seperately, directly to Telkom. And yes you pay Telkom the R413 for the ADSL line rental. Afrihost doesn't do ADSL line rental.

Don't you already have an existing Telkom line? If you do, you can get ADSL on that line, and can ignore the voice line rental cost as you are already paying for it. Most people already have Telkom phone lines, so adding ADSL to the line isn't too expensive, you don't need to add another R131 for voice line rental.

BTW - you can use your ADSL line and make a phone call on the same line at the same time. There is no need for a seperate dedicated line for ADSL.
