There would be an 'upgrade' path associated with the currently installed rom.

What I would advise is don't manually download a colorOS file from a 3rd party and flash manually. That could potentially result in a soft/hard brick of sorts.

Do everything via the official channels.

Or they might do the other Oneplus trick and just drop support for any device not on colorOS…
