Online Psychological Support Group

Hi SkippyRamirez, is there any reason for why you were trying to stay off of forums ? Any feedback positive or negative is appreciated and is of great value. I hope to hear from you.

Yep, same reason I avoid people that are not like me (which, at last count is most).

I hear your concerns, have there been any particular events that have struck you as significant in the shaping of this belief?

And how would you describe yourself SkippyRamirez ? Or what is your definition around the people that are not like you ?

@OP

You might actually be on to something. Create a website/forum that deals with various forms of psychological issues in different thread topics. I myself don't suffer of any I know of, but from experience on here people do tend to be more open about discussing their issues with the cloak of anonymity. A forums with different topics related to different psychological issues will get people to openly discuss it among fellow sufferers and that in itself is also a form of counselling isn't it?

Get Psychological students and practitioners to part take. best of all it will be global and not limited to a certain part of the world.

Hi Pitbull, you are correct in saying that forums are a form of counselling but are more referred to self - help or peer support groups. That in the last few years have proved to be extremely valuable in helping people with and or all of their issues. As humans, no matter who we are, we like to connect and not feel alone. Which is why part of our research involves chat forums such as these were we can receive feedback on what others think may work or not, and what issues they would like the forums to address. Thank you

A word of advice: If the Twitter account linked to your name is indeed yours, then I would not personally feel comfortable engaging with you on this topic, given some of the statements made in the public domain therein.

I know this is not entirely fair, but as this thread is already demonstrating, your online life is proving a hindrance to your academic query.

So, vaguely in relation to your actual question - The ability to be anonymous on a forum is a good thing....

Hi Copacetic, thank you for your input and your comments are not unjust. As part of anyones online life there are things that have been shared, or copied or posted that some might find offensive and / or inappropriate. All of us who are currently engaging in any online forums and or chat rooms as part of the research process do aim to trace and delete any of our accounts / pages that may have been created some years ago.

I'll just say this, since you asked. I've spent the better of 10 years closing doors, and spend an enormous amount of energy every day just to keep them closed . We all have our demons - some you can beat, some you learn to live with. People think I joke or exaggerate when I tell them I'm broken. Until they hear what happened, then they either start crying, or back away slowly in a weird manner. So, I keep to myself.

It's easier once you accept it.:D

Far easier is just to be anonymous yourself, but since that horse has already bolted it's a moot point. In any event, just for clarity - It's certainly not an issue of offence, so much as it is that in the context of therapy, academia, counselling, etc, there is an important need for separation between the mental health professional and their personal lives. From my perspective (as someone who does indeed make use of a therapist), I need to believe in your objectivity, which is difficult to do the more I happen to know about your external life.

In any event, no worries. I'm definitely qualified from a 'got a broken head' perspective to provide some insight to your question, although it's a bit loose at this point - Are you looking for people focus further questions at, or are you just looking for general response to your post?

I completely understand, however, due to some ethical concerns and safety regulations due to the nature of the questions asked myself and most of the researchers have to be transparent with the names. As any other alias would be considered deception and is unfair towards the individuals of whom the questions are being asked of. I do thank you for bringing to my attention that perhaps we should have concentrated on the online pages first and asked questions later, but as it so happens we all live and learn.

My research or rather the reason for me being here, is an assessment of the current status of peoples needs. Which is generally a basic outline that is given by individuals into the nature of the psychological issue they are experiences or may have experienced that they feel they might need help with and any feedback on how they think this could be managed (my proposal was an online forum where peers with similar issues could help one another).

However, with that said any feedback or any other ideas / concerns that people have are also welcome.
