Arms deal cost billions, if money leaves the country in return for unproductive goods, the currency depreciates, in turn that translates to billions lost. Think the cost of petrol is high? Imagine if that money was used to subsidise fuel in the economy (productive expense). Industry would boom for a while, more people will be employed, they will spend more, which would then subsidise tax to subsidise fuel again.

Government spending, is what makes our economy grow, imagine that money applied productively.
Heard of the great depression? Massive state spending turned the American economy around.

Instead we blew the money subsidising another economy, in return for a new merc which the negotiators of the transaction received.
