I was in the process of backing up my system so i could install win 7 and accidentally formatted the drive that i had just backed up all my stuff to... Anyone know of any decent free data recovery software? I'm currently running vista x64. Any help will be appreciated!

OnTrack. No free though, if you know what I mean ;)

HAHAHA!!!! You nana!!!

This is the stupidest thing you will ever have done.

There is a thread for this, go post in it ;)

Yeah I'm such a chop! I have 2 500gb drives in raid 0 that i needed to format (forgot to partition during windows install) and 2 more 500gb drives, one of them a new one i got this week, so i installed the new drive and formatted my full 500gb backup drive not realizing it was my backup drive

At least it was a quick format so i should get all my stuff back lol

I'm running testdisk atm and see that it is finding everything that i lost, but all the files names have changed .eg 0001, 0002 etc

If that's the case it looks like im going to have to rename 500gb of music, pics, docs etc

Looks like Ontrack is doing what it is supposed to do, can see that it is finding directories and file names yaaay!

R-studio has saved me from a similar mess, two years ago.

It needs an activation key though ... ;)

so you formatted two drives? surely if you formatted the drive you backed up to, the drive with the orginal data should still be available? what am i missing here?

Yea, i formatted my older drive that i backed up to insted of the new one lol, but anyway i got back pretty much everything i needed with ontrack easy recovery except one realllly old music folder that i did not even listen to anyway so im happy :>

The drive that i formatted was just stuff that i stored on it as backup and that stuff was not on my C drive which is 2 x 500gb in raid 0 which i needed to backup so i got another 500gb so i could backup the rest of my C drive but formatted my other 500gb drive instead of the new one lol.
