Some people take contracts and don't need device, it can be used for a gift or resell to get quick cash. If box is opened, resell value is lower.
A new SIM can be activated on any device.

What about when the device is bought online? It gets delivered sealed.

Mine was opened and turned on in store to "check that its working"...

Peace of mind for the store(high . If at a later stage you've changed mind unfortunately you unable to return the device.. Edcon(edgars, CNA, jet) you've to sign a paper that you acknowledge the phone is working. Some people deliberately break phones on purpose for a refund ask the salesperson he/she will tell you..

Nothing new. Been like this for years.

Most stores have a "subject to in-store activation" disclaimer on deals.

Telkom told me it was policy to open the box while VC just handed it over.
