Hi,

I don't know if this is the wrong forum I'm posting in - apologies if it is - but I hope someone can answer my question. When buying a new cellphone, is it protocol to open the box in store or am I allowed to do it at home? The only SP that has ever allowed me to open a new phone at home was Vodacom and I wish to open a contract with Telkom Mobile next, but want to know if they'll allow me to unbox it at home. This is just a personal preference, I really enjoy opening my gadgets myself in the privacy of my own home.

Since it's a contract they might wanna open to activate the card or whatever, best to just to ask in store.

I think this is new policy. Happened to me last year. They open it in store to ensure everything is in order, so as to prevent people coming back and saying it was broken or parts missing etc.

Is this some form of arousal?

I didn't know it was policy, but I insisted with the last number of phones/devices because to get VDC to honour OBF's is just too big a hassle. I only handle the device once they have tested it properly. If the device fails in the store, they can just pack it up and give you a new one there and then. No need to be weeks without a device because of their BS OBF processes.

The last phone i got in store was about 4 years ago when i got my Desire HD. Now i just get them delivered to my work. I also want to be the first to fondle my new gadget, i don't want some snot nosed creep touching my new toy before i get the chance.

When I got my first Android years ago, they (MTN) opened it in store.

I think if I'd have to go for another contract, I'd prefer it that way. If there is something wrong with the phone, you can always refuse it.

This. If a friend orders the same phone I have after I break mine and I can tell him to swap phones under warranty.

If you want to open the box yourself order your contract online.

Rather do it instore, let them do most of the grunt work, switch it on etc, any issues, you are RIGHT there anyways.

Yeah I feel like it's mine and I should open it. I want to boot it up myself etc, and there's no need to justify it. I get that it might be for warranty purposes, but if Vodacom allows it then why not the others? Also, if it's allowed when you order it online then I don't see the need for the difference in policy. But maybe I'm missing something.
Anyway, I'll try and order online if the guys in the store confirm that it's their policy to have boxes opened in the store.

Thanks for the responses.

Opened the box up in-store when doing my recent Cell C upgrade. Powered on device, inserted SIM, etc.

Makes sense, would rather know before taking it home if there are any problems or damage on the device.
