I tried ubuntu 8.04 but compiz and my ati v5200 just doesnt want to work. Now im thinking about openSUSE 10.3 but I see in a months time v11 will be released. Should I wait for v11, is it gfx card friendlier than ubuntu?

My Radeon 8550 also didn't want to work in Ubuntu, but OpenSUSE didn't have any problems with it whatsoever.

You can always upgrade to 11 when it becomes available... :D

So, what, if anything, is better about OpenSuse when compared to Ubuntu?

Personal choice really, I prefer Opensuse and Mandriva to Ubuntu but thats me. I just find them more polished but that could be that I have been using them for longer than ubuntu has been around. So I know their ins and outs better.

like I said its a personal choice, some people like blonds some brunettes they both do the same just in different ways :D

nice way of putting it. :D

So, in other words, no real reason for someone like myself to try it? (general PC user, and a newcomer to linux...)

Nope give a few a whirl if you can, you may be suprised, Just because you have only ever tried blonds will you turn down a brunette ?

Alright, maybe I'll give it a go when I have some time...

Your logic is flawed, both are flavors of linux, so it would be like having a brunette and having a brunette who dyed her hair blond. (Not that I would turn either down, which is why I will try OpenSuse ;) )

I was once reluctant to try out linux in the first place, I've never looked back since.

After trying Ubuntu 5.10 and 6.06 for a bit and hating our dialup, I fiddled with OpenSuse 10.2 for a few weeks, but found it irritating. Then I tried Suse Linux Desktop Edition (or SLED) and found it a little better to use, but still wasn't too happy.

Once we got ADSL I installed Ubuntu 7.04 and loved it. The best way to choose really is to try it out for your yourself.
