Openview vs DStv

Yes BC stands for Body Corporate.
A properly installed communal TV system has very little maintenance. The logic regarding getting third party to provide it is thus just giving someone authority to print money.
If a BC does not want handle it just means they are lazy.
Unfortunately, many of those older systems were custom designed around only MC, not allowing for a competitor to provide services.
Most older installations are now virtually obsolete.
It is the upgrade cost that frightens off the BC.

That's what I thought, it shouldn't have that much maintanace. I just feel there has to be an alternative but I don't know how to argue the point. I was considering raising it in future meetings but I want to have facts and solutions at least which I don't have now. I mean spending almost R200pm for 2 cables if you have a PVR isn't fare to me.

The way Ellies has done it is with older copper-based technologies (or at least the last point into each unit is copper). With a pay-per-port model and no automated switching, the only way they can control it is to cut off ports if units do not want them.

The situation is actually a lot worse.
There is MC who wants access to 4 ports for their services
OVHD single view decoders - one port, which could be daisy-chained provided they never make use of transponders on more than one polarisation.
Sentec pay-tv - they need one port IF they do not provide PVR type services
Terrestrial DTT services another port
That is already 6.
It is crazy that the charge is per port. A charge of a fixed amount for TV access to the communal antenna and then a marginal increase per port would be a much better business model. There is definitely not R100 per month's worth of effort let alone R 200! Makes MCs service just about impossible to afford if you live in a complex.
