Hi,

we set up OpenVPN to allow users to connect their PC's using their 3G cellphones as modems to the office server.

It works very well provided the files to download is less than around 200k.

We are investigating a number of ways to allow the downloading of larger files.

At present the link is PC-VC 3G - Telkom ADSL - server

Would it be beneficial to get a Linksys3G router and create a VC3G to VC3G link and cut out the ADSL portion?

Can the Linksys router run HSDPA?

Thanks

"Can the Linksys router run HSDPA?"

Sure it can, as long as the datacard it takes is capable of doing so.

Option, for one, also make a router that just takes the sim and then handles the rx/tx stuff itself, but I have not seen it advertised in SA.

I've got one lying under my table somewhere.....The Linksys is better as it keeps the data card separate from the router (so you can change it), while the Option has a 3G card integrated. So we decided not to release them.

How many users? Have you considered your own apn? That way you get direct point to point connectivity and you don't need to run vpn clients. You can also control internet access, if required, so the bundles are only used for what you dictate.

At present it will only be max 3 users.

1 user about 8 hours per week.

Other 2 very ad-hoc.

I don't think at this time an own APN would be worth the money.

The big question is if all traffic is carried via the VC network, (eg Pta - Cpt) will things go faster than when 1 leg is on Telkom and the other on VC?

I don't know the technicalities and advantages/problems of staying on VC or moving out of the VC network.

What is HSDPA max upload speed - the download max is published everywhere, but the max upload is not seen anywhere I looked :)
