OpenWeb ADSL Feedback Thread (Pt2)

VERY slow this side as well... torrents maxing out at 30kbps on my 10mbps line and silver turbo account.

Not impressed as this seemed to have been the norm of late.

Is there no descent isp locally that caters for uncapped users? I have not even been downloading as much...

Slow Internet...3 weeks and counting...honestly do not know why I'm paying R700 for this crap.

Guz

NNTP running below half speed this evening. Just watching it go down to 1/4 speed as I type this.

The network is currently very busy, therefore torrents and NNTP will be shaped until traffic reduces.

Very slow on my side, but I could still play BF4 on the PS4 without too much lag.

Any one else having browsing issues, sites are taking ages to load.

If you are downloading during peak shaping hours, browsing will become severly affected.

Kindly schedule downloads for after 19:00, this is when the network generally quietens down

It takes a while after the download is stopped for the browsing to return to normal.

Ideally, it would be advised to stop downloads at 7:55am if you intend on browsing during peak. If you do not care for browsing during peak, you may leave your downloads active

Currently not downloading. Browsing still quite slow.

why can't the download be shaped and the browsing not? my friend has an MWeb account, and during peak times his torrents crawl (correctly shaped) but he can still browse... isn't that how shaping is meant to be?

anyway, i haven't downloaded anything since 5am this morning, and yet my browsing is terribly slow. Youtube also buffering even on 144p

Browsing is shaped if heavy downloads are detected during peak, as some folks find it necessary to bypass shaping by using the browsing protocol.

ok, then what constitutes a heavy download? i work from home and often need to download drivers etc for repair jobs... i can't tell my clients to wait until tomorrow because i have to download their laptop's drivers after 7pm.. or what happens if java/flash/windows decides to do an update during the day?

Anything that would logically be considered a download, would affect shaping when the network is busy.

It is not guaranteed that everyday your browsing will be shaped when you download. This rule is only in place when the network is very busy, like today.

An update could be considered a download yes.

For critical downloads, may I suggest an unshaped account? It is always better to run a download on a Business Unshaped account opposed to a Home Uncapped Shaped account.

Question, which account are you using?

It is with sadness that I submitted my cancellation for my OpenWeb account.

I have a 4Mbps Gold Uncapped (Power) & it is totally unusable during the day with speeds reaching that of a dial-up modem.

After 17h00 (Which happens to coincide with the end of OpenWeb's business hours), everything flies & it is sometimes possible to reach 8Mb on a Speed Test.

The calendar month's notice has been given, so all I can say now is:

"So long & thanks for all the fish"

This sounds an awful lot like throttling the user, for simply downloading, though, not shaping.

I've tried to understand what protocols are usable during business hours, but I don't seem to ever get an aswer:

Gold Uncapped (Original) has a lower contention ratio and higher priority on the network, which allows for better performance overall

All I require is browsing, some Steam downloads (on the odd occasion, which I assume "shapes" my line) and Youtube. Are they no-go?
