OpenWeb ADSL Feedback Thread (Pt2)

The fact that you going on about how myBB complaints do not represent the majority of OW users, just shows me that either you are Keoma and/or Cableguy or another person working there. This is the same point they close with everytime they try and push this under the rug.

Ill stick to my theory and you can stick to your openweb salary :)

I made three, if you count the mob thing.

1) You are acting like a mob.

2) I'll quote myself here: "For instance, Cableguy didn't say there are multiple concurrent connections on their accounts, he said they choose how many there are, which he already said was one only. Now a bunch of you irrational types jump all over it howling with hands aloft. Incredible."

3) Except, if you read my post again, people generally get full speed after hours and on weekends. Explain how that is possible with shared accounts?

I do follow the thread. That is why I am shaking my head in disbelief. The other fallacy forwarded is that these complaints represent the majority of OW users, which doesn't make sense to me. Of the thousands of customers they have, a paltry few complain here and fewer still go into conniption fits. Out of thousands. Some leave, then come back just to slander some more after having moved to other ISPs.

I am not saying there aren't problems sometimes or that some problems have mysterious causes behind them, I am saying that you are making up all sorts of "theories" that don't make much sense.

Just for the record my OW username was damianv2. Any Damian V's here? :P

@Kalster - What is plausible is that many users are happy as long as web pages seem to be loading fine. The type of guys that use the forum will pick up on any issues relating to their ISP's and will be vocal about it. Surely just the sheer amount of new accounts handed out to the guys on the forum make you think something is up?

I think the reason that the 'majority' are fine and the forum minority aren't is simply because the guys on the forum will notice when things aren't as they should be.

Poor sakkie and rhettstar must be lying, but lucky sakkies thread was closed :)

I recently decided to grab myself one of the Gamer's King specials from Openweb. When I was mailed my username I noticed that it was not my [email protected] like it has been with previous ISP's but instead it was someone else's name... I logged on to users.isdsl.net to check and saw that there is usage for 2012 and even for 1-8 March...I opened the account on 8 March... My usage for yesterday and today, it says, is over 12 gigs... I have not even been at home!!! I want to know from you guys if this is normal, if so I don't think I am comfortable sharing usage on an uncapped account with someone else... Just now I am gonna be shaped or something and it's not even my doing... Has anyone else noticed this?

Posting it here because I want a formal answer.
I have a uncapped 512kb account from OpenWeb after the 1024k uncapped
MyADSL special stopped.
Been happy with it, no problems. I also like to check my usage every now and
then to see how much I downloaded.

This morning I log in, and I see two sessions - mine and another from Doornfontein.

How is that possible? When I had the myADSL special I knew that it wasnt
exclusive access, but yet I end up sharing an account again that I am
paying the full price for?

I need an explanation. I emailed you support team as well, but thought
other people with uncapped Openweb should check out users.isdsl.net
as well. For those who are going to say its pointless asking about sharing an
uncapped account, rather dont. That is not what this post is about.

I'd actually like to add to the above post. A lot of people on this forum are IT people, who regularly recommend using ISP's. I myself have gotten 9 other people on OW over the last few years. Therefore, saying you have thousands of other customers really has no relevance here. Simply because some of those customers could have joined on recommendations by forumites.

I've been with OW for a long time but have to admit that the lack of transparency is very very disappointing and has always been. That said, there are a lot of positives as well, so it's issues that OW needs to sort out.

I very rarely have issues, but have been experiencing slow speeds for the last week. I haven't logged a support ticket as you have stated the network is very busy. I understand that, no problem. I can suffer for a week. I would however be very disappointed if the allegations regarding sharing accounts prove to be true. Because then you are effectively lying to clients.

Overall, as stated before, I am very happy with OW.

This. I am aware that people are having issues and I've shared many of the same concerns over the years (and still do some of them), but right now I'm relatively happy with my account and I'm getting great value for money for it. My current account is performing just as good as the VB accounts did back in the day.

One thing I want to touch on that I strongly agree with is the lack of transparency from OW. I've been a customer since 2011 and in all that time I have never had access to the customer control panel. Originally when I asked why this was the case back in 2011, Cableguy (then the local OW troll and likely a shill)* bitched at me for expecting 'too much' from an account I got on special for R258 a month. I still don't have any access to the CP and I don't know why not. This is the first ISP I've encountered where my account is handled entirely through email.

That aside, I don't care too much. Back in 2012 I had a really ****ty time with my internet and was moved from one crappy account to the next until eventually I got the account I have now, which performs admirably. I've reached the point where I'm too scared to email OpenWeb for anything at all because I am terrified that they will want to give me new account details and I'd have to struggle with that all over again. At one point in 2012 I was convinced they were giving me account credentials for Standard Uncapped, because that's how poorly many of those accounts performed.

And yes, I also got many accounts with odd names not belonging to me, which I found very suspect at the time.

*To get back on this, I don't for a second believe Cableguy is a customer who got jumped up to Openweb rep randomly. The earliest time I encountered him was back in 2011, when he made a habit of trolling the OW threads and being rude and condescending to anyone who said anything remotely negative about OW, even when they were voicing legitimate concerns. Way back then people called him out on being an OW employee and I believe we were right. At one point Cableguy suddenly disappeared into the woodwork for months and then suddenly out of the blue he is promoted to OpenWeb forum rep by MrBeep?

I call shenanigans. Cableguy has always been an OpenWeb employee, but never made that officially known on the forums. He was only made an official forum rep when MrBeep needed someone to man the forums while he was away. Just have a look at his early posting history and see the kind of responses he left in OpenWeb feedback threads. In short, I do not trust Cableguy, at all. If I had to get support for my OpenWeb account, I would be too scared to entrust my account credentials to Cableguy.

(note, I'll be monitoring my account this week. Aside from the occasional hitch here and there, it's been running flawlessly the past two years. If it suddenly starts experiencing severe issues or underperforming, I'll know exactly what the reason is.)

I was having serious problems as well since about three weeks ago {pretty much that Monday that the first GoT episode came out} awful day time speeds, web pages timing out 50% of the time, Shaping only being lifted after 11 pm in the evening exct. However since yesterday my account has been performing excellently again, Browsing is fine in the day again, Youtube works again, shaping has already been reduced and it's only 5 pm.

Don't know if it's all the complaining in this thread but if my account performs even close to how it's performing now I am more than happy, keep up the good work openweb. :)

Probably because so many of us have chosen to cancel our accounts. Now there's significantly less traffic on the network.. I like to think of ourselves as martyrs ;)

Not the case for me... MyBB speed test wont start, YT and some other http traffic is stuck on connecting. No joy.

Probably has something to do with my account being shared by a different user in PE.

The same argument could be said for MWEB and the backlash on myBB and social media when they changed their uncapped rules to include the infamous "threshold."

In reality, only a small percentage (probably <1%) of MWEBs subscribers complained, and yes a few did have conniption fits.

The (respectfully) ignorant majority didn't have a problem with it but that doesn't mean those complaining didn't have a point or that what MWEB did was right. In fact it prompted MWEB to actually publish the thresholds so that existing and new subscribers could at least see what was going on i.e. there was some transparency.

Instead we have these lopsided arguments where one side makes claims and provides data to back it up and the other side simply says, "Your data is wrong," and never really explains why, thus squandering a great opportunity for transparency.

:D:D Er - I believe I would be one of these ....

Having said that, OW is still a better outfit than MWEB IMHO.
OW may not always be as transparent as we may wish, but MWEB were openly devious and bombastic, and did a complete 360 from their previous Free The Web mantra.

I certainly hope you guys get sorted by OW. The shaping - well I agree its a time related phenomenon, and I know it drove me crazy......

Kindly PM me so that I can test the account for you.

Right now, all should be unshaped except p2p and torrents, dependent on your service level

yup also experiencing very slow speeds tonight. hopefully it will pass. 70kbps download on a 10meg line (http from amazon)

I just sent in my cancellation, I was hesitant to be honest.

I've had some great experiences with Openweb through the years.

The daytime lack of usability has clinched it though.

I hope they can correct this issue, then I will revisit.

Just had to make sure that I sent my cancellation in before the 25th.

I've upgraded to VDSL and will be trying out Telkom for now.

Sad to go though.
