Yay only a few days to go

Luckily my OW account still works perfectly at night, making sure I download all my xbox 360 games and steam games before month end... Might as well

For those thinking of using OW, look at this:

this mornings scan:

>> > January 2012. Build 1008.
>> > Shaper Detection Module.
>> >
>> > Connected to server 38.106.70.162.
>> >
>> > Estimating capacity:
>> > Upstream: 508 Kbps.
>> > Downstream: 63 Kbps.
>> >
>> > The measurement will take upto 2.5 minutes. Please wait.
>> >
>> > Checking for traffic shapers:
>> >
>> > Upstream: No shaper detected.
>> > Median received rate: 485 Kbps.
>> >
>> > Downstream: Measurement aborted due to high packet loss rate.
>> >
>> > For more information, visit: http:www.cc.gatech.edu~parthadiffprobe

I report it and they say they will reset my account and i must check again at 9:00.

Check at 9:00 and it looks like this:

> DiffProbe release. January 2012. Build 1008.
> Shaper Detection Module.
>
> Connected to server 38.98.51.17.
>
> Estimating capacity:
> Upstream: 504 Kbps.
> Downstream: 6639 Kbps.
>

>
> Checking for traffic shapers:

> Median received rate: 485 Kbps.
>
> Downstream: No shaper detected.
> Median received rate: 6496 Kbps.
>
> For more information, visit: http://www.cc.gatech.edu/~partha/diffprobe

Looks much better, but 1 hour later it looks like this:

DiffProbe release. January 2012. Build 1008.
Shaper Detection Module.

Connected to server 38.102.0.111.

Estimating capacity:
Upstream: 514 Kbps.
Downstream: 2 Kbps.

The measurement will take upto 2.5 minutes. Please wait.

Checking for traffic shapers:

Upstream: Burst size: 12-10 KB;
Shaping rate: 485 Kbps.

Downstream: No shaper detected.
Median received rate: 37 Kbps.

And this is the answer i get on complaining:

Your account type is : [4Mbps Everyday Uncapped]

It is peak shaping time currently, thus shaping will be enforced on heavy protocols.
Shaping is in effect during busy periods. When the network quietens down, we generally tend to unshape the connection completely. We always advise
clients to download in the evenings and on the weekend.
We expect things to quieten down at around 18:00 to 19:00 for an evening of download fun.

Median received rate: 37 Kbps.

How is that even possible :O.

They should rename it to everynight uncapped.

Hilarious. These blanket excuses are used for all problems which occur during hours. The other one I can think of now is "you downloaded which caused the shaper to kick in".

As we've discussed here, there is no dynamic shaping ("based on network demand") whatsoever, just static shaping according to times like clockwork.

What are the concurrent connections like on your account? Sharing with anyone?

I went away for 3 weeks, came back ,and my download speeds at night were limited to 20kb/s.

I was told to "avoid downloading during the day to avoid shaping at night".

7 days to go. Account is still usable after 5PM and unshaped after midnight. During the day it takes up to an hour to receive a 1-2MB email in Outlook, presumably due to high packet loss and/or getting disconnected from the email sever due to timeouts.

Ran SASA Online stats and it shows 1 concurrent.

My OW 'Gold' account will be RIP'd in exactly 6 days. Good riddance! Mr. Beep, I thought you were morally superior to MWEB's Mr. D. Hershaw  This is probably the biggest tech related mistake I've ever made in my life. Bye!

Hahaha :D What are you going to do now? If I were you, I would start packing up my stuff and move to a real decent ISP. IMHO, it's the most logical solution to all of your OW related issues. Mr. Beep is not here to help you anymore because he's on a never-ending vacation somewhere in Durban.

I'm going to monitor my line and then chat to MrBeep - Like I've said before in another thread, I've never had issues with OpenWeb or MrBeep in the past.
I have an issue, he / they fix it - but now I feel like I'm paying MORE for a product that everyone else is paying less for and I'm going to monitor this then message and chat with them.

By fixing your issue, you mean they gave you another account? It's akin to sweeping dog **** under the carpet.

Got this a while back when my first OW account was almost unusable.

"I have moved you to this alternate routing profile:

Username: *****@openweb.co.za
Password: 1122

You must please use the new account from now on."

When I started using this account. My first account was suddenly blocked due to incorrect username/password error :D Guess where this one went to.

This is one of my favourite Mr. Beep responses :D So classic!

"Hi *******

It sounds like a router or Telkom fault."

Well, yeah, that's what they did, because the account details I have in my CP are not the same that I have on my router, but he gave me the account to use and I used it and it has been working fine since.
The only issue now; The amount I'm paying... I'm paying R226 a month where as others are paying less for probably the same products / higher speed products.
