OpenWeb ADSL Feedback Thread (Pt2)

Hi everyone ...
Since about a week and a half ago, I started to get really bad DNS timeouts ...
I'm using the 2 recommended DNS servers (168.210.2.2 & 196.14.239.2) ...
I've set my router to auto DNS .....maunally configured it to use both DNS servers .... I've even went with the option of manually setting my PC to use those two DNS servers ....
It seems like I don't have a problem connecting to the DNS servers, but they constantly get timeouts when doing a name lookup)

DNS request timed out.
timeout was 2 seconds.

For one moment things will work fine, then for the next moment timeouts ....
Any ideas what might cause this?

Have you tried using other DNS servers like Google DNS?

Try using 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 and see if that resolves the issue.
 
Hi there,

I'm on the 4Mbps Titan Uncapped package and for the past week the speed on international sites is almost at a standstill! (weekdays during office hours) This is for normal browsing (after hours speed is okay). Please help.

Cool .... I've manually set my PC to use those two ..... so far so good! ... No timeouts when doing nslookups ..
I'm gonna manually set my router to use those and see what happens ...

MrBEEP, consider allowing clients to have a free 1GB unshaped account per line registered for clients to test with the way Afrihost and Web Africa does it.

Running out of mobile data fast, and will not be able to recharge AGAIN.

When is this excessive shaping policy going to be resolved on this account?

Yes, our accounts are not shaped during the day, they are throttled. Has been like this all week, only gets better after 17:30. Expected more from a Gold account.

Please guys! Honestly!
You quick to say "drop us a e-mail" but when I say my internet is dead slow - I mean it is dead slow!

1. I can't download Ghost Recon Online - error message is Can't connect to server!
2. Steam won't do squat, cloud syncs fail
3. BF4 - no games available to play (HUH?!?!!?)
4. Facebook, Twitter, Gmail, everything INTERNATIONAL is dead - they take forever to load so... THUS... I can't send e-mails, hell, I can't receive e-mails!
5. MyBB is also slow. I have to wait forever for the "quick reply" box to appear so I can post and then that takes 2/3 minutes to submit.

Get what I'm saying!??

ROFLMAO ... Sorry not at you, WITH you. I had this the last time a reported a line fault to Telscum, I was asked to mail them ... on a non existent DSL line....

As the saying goes COMMON sense is just NOT that COMMON!!
 
I have the same experience with OW. I could set my watch to the time is was usable and utterly crap. Used to have decent speeds after 5 on the dot till 8 the next morning. But the past couple of days I don't even bother trying to use it during the day. Can't even open up News24, check mails or do any browsing for that matter. And the past 2 days it got even worse. Even after 5 my downloads are sitting at 200 b/s. And I am on the 4 mb gold uncapped account..... ueseless to me now.
 
Unfortunately this is not the case. You just need to follow this thread, and you will see plenty of examples of accounts marketed as prioritised performing worse than cheaper accounts, and vice versa cheap accounts outperforming more expensive accounts marketed as being better.

Note that this mainly relates to during hours usage, since most accounts are unshaped after 17h00/in the evenings.

The most common occurrence is clients being ecstatic with their new account in the beginning, only to have find it unusable, during hours, a few weeks/months later.

It's startling how much of this I've witnessed...
isn't that how the prioritisation works?

from my understanding the cheaper accounts will work just as well if the connections are not busy?
 
Yeah I'm going to cancel after less than 48 Hours with a 4Meg Titan account. It only runs as full line speed from about 21:00. R10 extra for a Connection account that runs 99% full tilt after 17:30 seems to be a better deal.

I know it's late and stuff and you're probably busy ... But could you please check out my 6Mb Gold Uncapped account when you get a chance?
Web Surfing seems to be OK but torrents have been insanely slow for the past few days, looong after hours...
Also noticed this afternoon (between about 2:30 and 5PM) that my HTTP traffic is really slow (1.x Mb) which is not cool if I'm working from home.

P.S.
- Cleared all settings on my Billion 300GRA Router (just to be sure)
- Used the Port Reset tool from WebAfrica last night to reset my Telkom ports
- Line quality seems fine, no packet loss etc.

Really hoping this is just an isolated incident or configuration problem or I'll have to cancel, no need to pay a premium if I can get the same service for cheaper when it comes to downloading etc. and OpenWeb has really been awesome before this week.
 
< 10Kbps downloads @ 9PM - you are kidding me right Openweb????

Are we heavily shaped at the moment ? If so -- WHY ???????????????????
 
Agreed.... there is something seriously wrong. It used to be a pleasure after mweb but I guess the party is over.
I get a full 5KB/s.......
