OpenWeb ADSL Feedback Thread (Pt2)

Shaping is still applied as the network is quite busy tonight due to the Microsoft Updates.

We expect shaping to ease off at around 22:00 to 23:00 this evening

Is there a problem in the Western Cape again? nntp @ 0-1KB/s

Anyone on the same or lower tier that can post some speedtests too?

This would be your download speed, during peak.

Not your browsing speed. We do not prioritise Speedtest like most of the other ISP's. It was decided a while back that this would be unethical. Therefore, we leave it as is, and have it measure your download speed accurately.

@ cableguy
Just got home and see my speeds reduced from normal 380-400kb down to zero around 7-8am this morning. Tried rebooting modem, etc and my account will not connect/sync to OW at all.
My backup Mweb account connects immediately...
PM sent ;)

Cableguy,

Why is HTTP shaped to death? I cannot use Gmail, let's not even start with youtube.com

I feel this is a double edged strategy.

On the one hand, by seeing poor results, it's harder to troubleshoot shaping IMO.

If one gets full speed on speedtest, but poor speed's on DL's, then it's easy to see it's shaping.

Different story when ISP says browsing isn't shaped (even tho it feels like it is and no way to test this) only downloads, but, when, after experiencing exactly that (poor browsing), one would naturally do a speedtest, and when the speeds are slow there too then, IMO, one can assume browsing is shaped too.

EDIT: Just like being on 1 star :D

Well thats a change of heart. In the past, OW would suggest speed tests were inaccurate and not a good measure to use?

Just like how IS usage tracking doesn't apply either right?

Hehe, of course, we've shown that it is 100% accurate. Even one of the biggest supporters who would always quote "IS user stats is inaccurate" when people were asking questions, finally agreed that they are accurate.

But this didn't seem to mean much to them. :D

IS user stats is blocked now, but SAIX still works - and it's still possible to pick up account sharing, though not as easy as IS.

All speedtest is doing is measuring your download speed.

International speedtests are very inaccurate, due to the high latency.

Local is more accurate (definitely not 100%) in measuring your current download speed.

We have not yet come across one that measures browsing.
