OpenWeb ADSL Feedback Thread (Pt2)

We try and not use pool accounts often with manual assignment, but when things get busy, it is the easiest way of getting a username to the client.

If you signed up with a credit card, and opted for instant activation, it will definitely be a pool account. The system has no other way of delivering it.

If you signed up via any other method, it will probably be a new account that is manually created by provisioning. In this case, a default password can be used if a stronger username is assigned.

We do advise clients to change their passwords regularly though.

I am beginning to worry... How come my password that would have been "changed by the system" is the exact one mentioned a few threads back...? These answers are contradicting one another.

But no option for this exists on legacy accounts without the request to have this activated IIRC

If you email [email protected] they will be able to do this for you.

Newer accounts can have the password self management function activated, which will allow you to manage your own password.

So I have a "pool account" with a generic password. What service level is allocated to a pool account and what precisely is the difference if i had purchased the account via, e.g. debit order?

The service level you order is assigned to the 'pool' username.

Eg, if you order Everyday Uncapped, that profile is loaded to the username.

Did you order it with instant activation via credit card?

Only instant activation via credit card accounts will be automatically assigned via the pool.

If you had to wait for your details, eg it is not displayed on the next page after your credit card purchase is a success, this would be a manual activation account.

When I logged into the CP it showed the original username and password from a year ago. It was only updated yesterday when I asked again to have the password change ability activated.
When a user is moved to another username, the profile they have purchased is attached to the username along with the necessary routing changes. Do you have access to the CP? This too should contain your full product description...

Thanks for explaining. But surely a few hundred thousand usernames could have been pre-loaded into the various pools? Also, the process you described seems to allow a race condition that would lead to the CP handing out the same username more than once. Good thing the new system will be launching in the future.
...The current system, written quite a few years ago re-uses usernames as it was an easy way to pre-load usernames into a pool, which would then be ready for instant activation. Our CP did not latch into an API in the past, therefore available usernames were loaded onto the system, and could be instantly assigned when a client orders with a credit card.

Now of course, we link into the core systems directly, which renders this an old way of doing things, and will be done away with when the new CP launches.

There are quite a few usernames in the mix yes.

The current CP has checks built into it that will prevent double assigning. It removes it from the pool once a user has been assigned.

Okay, so just got confirmation from the guys with the identical login credentials. The one has a 2mbps account and the other has a 4mbps account. They're in different classes of product as well, the 2mbps being a flavour of Gold and the other being Titan or similar.

To recap:

* We run our own network capacity powered by our first tier supplier.
* There are very few accounts left that use the standard 'resell' model
* We do not share accounts. We share capacity.
* We pay for capacity. Therefore, sharing accounts on purpose would be pointless
* We do not log usage stats by default. If you would like your stats logged, kindly email [email protected] so that it can be activated
* Account theft is a reality. All ISP's suffer from this. We suggest you request regular password changes on your account to prevent this from happening. Also please keep the firmware in your router updated.
Listen mate, nobody stole my password. Not even my wife knows what the login details are for this ADSL.
I went to speak to the owner of said petrol station. He has no clue what I am on about, but he says that if there is any funny business he will go to court to testify. I said I am not going to waste good money chasing bad service providers, its just easier to vote with my wallet.

You are throttling my internet and doing so whenever it suits you. It blows my mind, every time I open my mouth here, the shaping gets relaxed, like tonight... the line is maxed out... full speed! On Tuesday I couldn't even get 1/8th of this speed.

While you might not persue it legally, good on you for following up as far as meeting the guy. Did he at least confirm details matching in person, or too IT "outoftheloop" to know them? (Such as him getting someone else to set it up for him or whatnot).

We do not purchase capacity through this provider.

Please only monitor usage stats by using an OpenWeb usage monitoring tool.

I'm pretty sure you do. SAIX is Telkom Internet. I was on one of these SAIX accounts in 2012 but due to incredibly poor P2P performance, I left it.

Wow. Got my new "Special" account earlier today. Speed was better during the day. Tonight however, NNTP speed ranges between 4B/s and 4 KB/s. I miss my dialup account i had with ICON in 1997. I was faster than what i get now on a GOLD account with OpenWeb. I am sorry I did not cancel my account earlier in the week, as I will have to live with this for another 2 months.

Downgrade to the cheapest account now and then submit cancellation, take the knock and use another ISP for the next month, is what I would do :)

We do not use SAIX at all today. We consolidated our userbase as much as possible.

We currently have our own capacity on IS, and have some clients on MTN. These are the only two networks currently in use.

No you don't. But their stats are still accurate and show account sharing.

Anyone else crawling along at nothing more than 60kb on NNTP this evening?
Wait, it's now dropped and averaged to 28kb...

Which area are you in?

Gauteng and surrounds is currently shaped on NNTP and torrents. We expect things to quieten down in the next hour or so.

Western Cape and surrounds is still shaped but not as badly.

KZN and surrounds looks great!
