OpenWeb ADSL Feedback Thread (Pt2)

At 7.30 last night my OW account was running at half speed. My Afrihost account was running normally so I know it's not a line issue.

So glad that I won't have to deal with these guys at the end of the month.

strangely my line ran full speed yesterday 425kbps. but back to 30kbps today and no browsing.

1st of july cannot arrive soon enough to try decent (I hope) internet again...

Yay! No shaper detected! :p

I've been having issues with line speeds for months and just brushed it off, then contacted [email protected] and it was resolved, then 2 months later, line speed was upto crap again and they reset it again and guess what, I'm having the same speed slowdowns again.

Thought i was the only one who was having problems and popped onto MyBB just to check and WOW, its a trend.

Prior to reading this, I already made my mind to switch to another ISP.

My other ISP account just went for a ball, so I thought "Hey, I have 7 days to go with OW on my Titan Uncapped before it's cancelled for good" - I haven't used it much over this month cos of all the speed issues.

Great, OW login details input to the modem and connection established - WTF cannot get more than 70KB/s on a 4MB line - FFS it's nearly 21h30 at night and still shaped to death.

Well I suppose I'll just have to wait the 25 minutes to D/L a 75mb PDF file...

I told them that at 21:40 i could not get speeds over 30kbps, even web browsing was suffering. Was told to only schedule downloads after 22:00. Looking to go elsewhere now.

Hilarious. These blanket excuses are used for all problems which occur during hours. The other one I can think of now is "you downloaded which caused the shaper to kick in".

As we've discussed here, there is no dynamic shaping ("based on network demand") whatsoever, just static shaping according to times like clockwork.

What are the concurrent connections like on your account? Sharing with anyone?

I got the same reply when I emailed them about unusable internet speeds. 10-20 kbps, max 30kbps. I emailed them in the day, and complained about the slow speeds I was experiencing at night. They kept telling me that its currently peak time and that I should schedule all downloads after 7pm. They even had the nerve to offer me a more expensive package to get higher speeds. It took 4 emails before they understood what I had been telling them. Still it did not come right. I emailed them at 21:40 last night telling them about the super slow speeds I was experiencing at the time, only to have them tell me to schedule downloads after 10pm. Even though the same email mentioned that I could barely even browse.

No help at all, What am i supposed to do with an internet account that is only usable while i am asleep is beyond me. Currently looking for a new ISP.
Any suggestions?

Well it's 7:04 and P2P is flying at a whopping 5KB/s. Was actually slightly faster before 7. Lately I've found the floodgates only open at around 1am, and close again around 9am.

5kbps and under on a 10mbps line over here. I've emailed them before and they have twice already given me new log in details!

I guess it's time to look for a new ISP...

Me too!!!

forgive me for posting here as i am not an OW subscriber, cancelled with them over a year ago...
I had the 4mb original gold account, which worked flawlessly for about 6 months, no shaping or throttling...
in the last 3 months that i stayed with them, it all went downhill, subscribers on a silver package and gamers package were getting much better speeds than i was...
so i left and joined Afrihost, I am on the 10Mbps Business Uncapped, I have never been shaped or throttled in the past year that I have been with them, whether its torrents, nntp, streaming, all works like a dream, just thought i would share my experience thus far...

below is my latest speed test result, SAIX speed test done :
Last Result:
Download Speed: 8642 kbps (1080.3 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 854 kbps (106.8 KB/sec transfer rate)
Latency: 52 ms

lol...

as someone said earlier, it may just be hit or miss with OW, guess I was one of the unlucky ones...

Mine was fine for ages, now it's pretty bad. Before I used to get max speed at 6 PM (as originally advertised). Now I am sitting at 30-50% line speed until after 11 pm. I honestly don't care much about P2P, but the entire account is affected and this means if I want to sit and watch any livestreams I'm basically screwed until after 11 PM. Not to mention because I'm only getting 1-2 meg on a 4 meg account, the moment my bro starts to do anything my ping goes to **** if I'm gaming...

Ok. As it turns out, OW may not be trying to **** us. Or at least, they're not trying to **** me.

The TLDR is I got a Telkom guy to change some settings on my ADSL so I could get a full 10 meg on my line, and the guy went even further and full enabled the ADSL 2+ capability of my line because someone never bothered to turn that **** on. So now I'm using my OW account and guess what? P2P still runs slow (it's daytime, that's fine), but I'm watching 480p during the day with no issues at all. Downloads which used to be 50k - 100k are now running at 300-350k. This account hasn't been like this since I got the damn thing, so OW's "routing" excuse may actually be legit.

I don't know about you guys, but you may need to put your pitchforks down. I'm putting down mine.
