OpenWeb ADSL Feedback Thread (Pt2)

They make money selling xGB to users who use <xGB and leverage that to sell xGB at a reduced price.

Also, for those after hours gigs, they just use the bandwidth business users pay for and give it to consumers for cheap because unused bandwidth is a loss either way

Fair enough...but then surely it does not cost R5 a gig if you take all factors into account...

Considering ISPs buy bandwidth and not a set amount of usage, I don't know how they come up with costs. All I know is Telekom charges a **** tonne for IPC

I'm on the '2Mb Gold Uncapped Promotion', which I later found out is supposedly not as good as the standard '2Mb Gold Uncapped'; something to do with the 'Promotion' tag, apparently. But I've never had *any* problems after a slight glitch in the beginning where I was moved to a different backbone. It must be going on/over 2 years now & I get 90%+ 2mb 24/7. Actually more than that since my line was upgraded to 4mb. Can't really comment on gaming, but torrents & bulk downloads work 100% all the time. I don't really stream anything other than 3 or 4 times a month, after hours...which still works fine on 2mb.

Yeah I get about 3.5mbps most of the time.
Streaming on 480p works fluently and on 720p is has a bit of lag inbetween.
Gaming is fine, no issues at all.
When I signed up for the Gold uncapped(back then 1Mb Gold Uncapped) I was put on SAIX but I asked them to move me to IS(since I used that before on my old 3GB Capped account).

@Woodlands, sure dude if you pay for it, go ahead and use it :D

I have signed quite a few people up for capped products and the majority of the months they use much less than half of the allocated data, on the odd month they will use close to the allocated data. Just so that they don't run out of data, the account's of capped users are much bigger than the average usage.

Nope, but you still have time to opt-out before 25 Oct to end 30 Nov; and come join the rest here

How good is CW? I was planning on upgrading to 10mbps uncapped by AH but WebAfrica has been doing pretty great with their trial account and in fact I have been getting better performance from every other ISP other than AH

Nah, I'm happy where I am.

Off topic, but apparently Openweb has increased capacity by 30%

[EDIT] Btw, my downloads were hauling ass last night. From around 5:30pm (when I got home) my 2Mbps line was chowing down at a rate of 220KBps.
