OpenWeb, Astraweb, or the whole web?

Hi there

I've recently (since end last year) switched over to an OpenWeb gold uncapped account.

Problem is, I just don't seem to be getting the speeds I should be getting from Astraweb (4Mb line), and I would consider it a good day, if I got round 150KB/s.

Most of my other downloads run fine (direct, or through FDM).

I've been able to kinda cope with this, since if the articles are also on the IS news server, I would get proper speeds.

Lately, it's been getting worse though. Up to the point where I'm now sitting, staring at the download screen, hoping to see 5KB/s.

Before posting this, I switched to my WA-in-case-seacom-goes-down-AGAIN-int-prepaid account to test, and the download immediately climbed to full speed and sat there like a nit in a primary school.

I'd like to first find out if there is anything wrong with the intertubes, or some trick to get openweb and astraweb to play nice, before I go around shouting at some poor OpenWeb rep, as in general, I have had no issues with their service....aside from me not getting my usenet fix =]

I'm using alt.binz to download from astraweb, and my OpenWeb username ends in @openweb.

Thanks for any advice.

The first username I had with them, ended in @vb.co.za, and that was just sucky all over the place.

That will be my "last resort" step, I guess. First wanted to see if anybody would come back with "lol, the intertubes si down, noob" or some tip or trick with alt.binz and astraweb.

I hate to repeat myself - but are you running torrents at the same time as newsgroups? I found that killed my newsgroup downloads on Openweb

Nah, that's a fair question, however, no, I do one thing (download) at a time.

My Astraweb downloads pretty much run at full speed all the time. I'm on VB backbone (4Mb). I am very happy with my connection.

My last 5 news server downloads (average speed):

1. 404.73KB/s
2. 392.73KB/s
3. 404.44KB/s
4. 404.90KB/s
5. 408.48KB/s

You can see why I'm pretty pleased still.

So, I popped a mail over to OpenWeb, and got a reply pretty quick (one reason I do like them). Told me they will have my port reset and I should do the old 30min power down around 18:30. I did that, and everything was all peachy after that.

Till this morning, anyway... Where it was only usenet that was stuffed, my entire connection is now buggered. Best I get on anything is around 23KB/s download. (Well, on the plus side, at least I get a steady usenet conn...yay...)

Even local is stuffed, Speedtest.net results to Midrand (I'm in Pta) get download: 0.19Mb/s and up: 0.84Mb/s...

According to OpenWeb, it's that general Telkom snafu that's messing it up.

I see there is a lot of general, well, ***, at the moment, and I was VERY pleased last night, so I guess I'm going to have to sit it out for a while and see what happens.

yea, I'm om the 899 axxess thing. I always get full speed from astraweb on that.

I meant 1GB prepaid - to compare when Openweb is down... it helped me a lot to see when there was or wasn't a problem.
