Openweb Forever

While I think Openweb's customer feedback on faults could be improved, the quality of the Gold uncapped service is far superior to any other competing product. Seacom was down for two days before I heard about it purely because my internet experience was not significantly affected and I didn't need to go searching for ADSL fault info. I'm not interested in competitions, emails from the CEO etc. I pay for decent internet and as long as I get that, the rest is unimportant.

openweb's gold is probably the best internet package available in the country... i've said that how many times.

my problem is the way openweb speak to and treat their customers.

Luckily with them being the best ISP with such a solid service, you don't have to talk to them very often at all...

Man, you got converted real quick! heheh :D

I agree... had my port reset a total of 2 times a month or two ago, and that was that... 30 mins to wait for it to max out again.
Now keep in mind, I run a tight ship with monitors and stats - that 1 hour of downtime was for the whole of 3 months... I literally run my machine 24/7.
(also, only my NNTP protocols were affected, browsing/youtube/etc had no problems. I was basically complaining that my Usenet was not maxed during business hours, lol)

Haven't needed to ask MrBeep for help in ages though, so you're right about not needing to speak with them often.

In today's uncapped world, I don't even know why people are wasting their time with other ISPs, seriously boggled my mind...

Yeah, you show those ppl who's boss! Go pay for an inferior product from an inferior ISP! That will teach those ppl.

Regardless, maybe Openweb should look into their custoemr service a bit (even though I've never had issues), but it's not reason enough for me to leave what is possibly the best ISP with the best uncapped service in this country.

I actually made a fuss about Openweb a few months ago(right here on MBB)as the initial account was real pooh and almost got roasted by its followers. then i was called by them and we made friends and ever since i been as happy as a pig in SH*T.And must say always been the most friendly bunch.

I also thought the same... why "promote" OpenWeb, everybody is gonna jump on board and hog the bandwidth!

Then I thought to myself, no, it's the other way around. if less people use openweb, openweb will have a smaller income, and less to spend on expensive equipment/servers/etc..
then they will only ever be a "small" ISP.

If I promote OpenWeb, not only will they grow, but they will be better competition towards Mweb and the rest with crappy AUP and all that, no free wifi, throtteling, abuse letters, you know the drill....

It's like this, If you like Dr.Pepper and they sell it in a small corner at your spar, don't hide that fact so "you can have more for yourself" - tell everybody, and then that spar will only order more and more Dr.Pepper, instead of less and less.

Build demand for a good product, and supply will naturally follow.

Ew, Dr. Pepper :D

it seem that a lot of mybb forumites cant actually read. pls get your facts straight before making wild statements

"when my line did not perform the way it should for a gold package with loads of speedtests from openweb and other isp's, their answer simply were that its my line. or my router. telkom spend two days at my property and could not find any fault. used 4 diffirent routers (apart from telkom's own). 5 diffirent isp accounts."

i had 5 diffirent isp accounts. apart from openweb. 2 business, 2 capped and an uncapped account.

my gold account ran at 50 - 100KB/s instead of 220KB/s as a 2MB gold account should. i did provide speedtest apon speedtest yet openweb insisted there's nothing wrong. i've logged several faults with telkom which could not find anything wrong on my side. then my account miraculously fixed itself.

after i've been told by openweb that i must give a months notice, i started using the account as i'm not simply going to throw the money in the water.

@Keeper - you make a very valid plea "Then I thought to myself, no, it's the other way around. if less people use openweb, openweb will have a smaller income, and less to spend on expensive equipment/servers/etc..

the problem is that as long as your account works fine, you never get to see the other side of openweb. but once your having problems, it turns into major ones. as all faults are either your router or telkom. till you get there, you would never kno how frustrating this actually is.

Dammit! Shhhhhh! Mrbeep head will grow! :) my usual review: rabid dog. End of!

openweb is not a very nice company. no matter whats wrong, its always your router or telkoms fault.

they're rude and nasty. they can do with a few customer relation courses as their customer relations sukcs big time. just read the way they reply to their customers here on mybb. its awful.

they might have the best internet but i'll rather go with a company thats not always blaming someone else for their faults and a little friendlier...

my 5 cents

Their customer service is appalling. I was dead set on Openweb Gold Uncapped & Unshaped, and the call centre support, MyBB thread support and slow trial account speeds chased me the hell away. No way I'm handing over R1.3k a month when people treat me like that.

So I moved to Afrihost 6Mbps Business Uncapped instead, and barring a few network issues with the Eassy break and Cape Town IPC failure, it's been great. Unshaped 24 hours a day most days and the Clientzone is light years ahead of the other ISP's. The call centre is very pleasant to use.

@Keeper - i would like to kno whats your download speed today? as mine's 2KB/s from a local site today. and then i should be happy paying for a gold account?

There is currently a network fault as posted on the main thread.

I'm afraid one cannot judge the service level of a product when there is a network fault.

You stated yesterday that your product has been working well. The network fault will cause slow speeds.

I admit my internet was a little slow mid-day, for around 2 or so hours (iirc) - could only make 50KB/s across the board (Youtube/NNTP/hhtp download)

Today was probably the worst I've seen from OpenWeb, honestly. but 2 hours @ 50KB/s (on my 1mb line) is really no issue for me if you look at my total consumption.
I don't lie when I say I utilize my connection 24/7, not joking.

So yeah, I had some issues today but I'm still happy with OpenWeb... at least OpenWeb leaves me alone to use my internet how I want without bothering me, unlike almost all other ISPs (maybe not plugg, i've heard good things about them too)

All in all it's gonna take one giant f-ckup from OW before I leave them, their Gold accounts is pure internet bliss.

I'm thinking of joining openweb at the end of the month when my mweb account is finally cancelled.

What I wanna know is, what's the disparity in performance between all the accounts? Yes, I can see the differences on their website, but I'm referring to how they differ in reality. Everyone says OW Gold is the best, but are they talking about the shaped or the unshaped gold account? As the price difference is pretty big. If the shaped one isnt recommended, then how big a difference in performance is there between the standard/silver/gold shaped account?

I am quite a heavy downloader, but not 24/7. Probably somewhere between 100-200gb a month on my 1mb line. (btw, 1mb is the highest speed my line will sync at whilst remaining stable). Which account should fit my needs best?

Thanks.
