Openweb launches hybrid capped-uncapped ADSL service

Wait a second... i pay more for my 4mbps uncapped with them... and i have next to no daytime throughput (admittedly i'm a heavy user).

So if i pay them less, i can now get 50gb of daytime data (unshaped), and the same uncapped i get afterhours? makes perfect sense.

As per previous posters - no thanks, this is my last month with them. I'll support my fellow forumites instead @ CW

What is your experience with Afrihost Business Uncapped? Is it truly unshaped 24/7?

Afrihost Business Uncapped performs well in the Northern region. It's 24/7 unshaped bar a few issues now and then, I believe.

I tested it during the major IPC issues in the South, and it wasn't great. Most of these issues have been resolved though, it seems.

I don't really follow their threads. My point though, was that if you're shaped on Afrihost, you're on a Home Uncapped account - not Business.

Another option is WebAfrica Business/Home Uncapped. But they do have FUPs, and your downloads should be scheduled between 00h00 and 06h00. Again though, the Business accounts are unshaped 24/7.

From what I have read, this sounds more or less the same as Telkom's SoftCap products...I wonder which one is cheaper (Telkom or OW)...

Throttling to 384Kbps....that is ridiculous....at least half the line speed of the user.

IMO the hybrid account is the future of ADSL in South Africa. Hope MTN (Afrihost/Axxess) and IS will follow...

Nope. I want an uncapped account, so I don't need to worry about getting capped at any time.

Companies also need proper uncapped accounts, not this sort of junk where they run the risk of getting capped during office hours...

Hah, will the MyBB community ever forgive them or is it an irreconcilable relationship?

I see the marketing spiel is strong with Dr Wright:
Clients are demanding premium capped bandwidth during office hours and uncapped data after hours. We have finally made this request a reality

The real reality is that the existing offering doesn't work as originally advertised and false pretense was given around it. So the demand was not to create a whole new product, but to fix the existing product.

To answer some questions in this thread, refer to their site:
* Usage consumed Monday to Friday between 07:00 and 19:00 will be deducted from your cap. All other times is considered off peak.
* Premium Capped Unshaped data up to 6Mbps during peak.
* Uncapped Shaped access up to 6Mbps off peak.
* When cap is reached, daytime speeds will be limited to 384k. Off peak access will continue to run at normal speeds even if the daytime cap has been reached.
* Topup your daytime cap in increments of 50GB's.

384k is not broadband speeds; but I suppose it's better than the service level received on their "normal" "Gold" uncapped products.

I have to admit though that I'm impressed by the fact that they are not providing this product in different speed brackets, but rather limit you to 6Mbps. That's some consolation for the guys on 4Mbps and 6Mbps that are already paying "premium" money for a sub standard Gold service.
Would be interesting to see how many of their customers "downgrade" (technically will be an upgrade) to this new product offering.

Hurry, only 1000 accounts left! [quoted on 09/07 at 13h33]

This is so funny!

This must be a very bad f*** joke! Then I would rather have Telkom's SoftCap.

This must be how the other ISP's will also be responding to Telkom's SoftCap offerings. What a big LOL!!! Hahahahaha!! :p

Not sure if anyone has noticed, but if your account is shared, when you cancel it, you can still use it for free after your notification period. The account hasn't been closed and is still active and in use by other people.
I had this happen to me, after my month's notice period, I had not set up another account yet and was still able to get internet access. I was not billed for that month either.
The account was so slow and useless, that I ended up paying for a decent service, rather than getting a rubbish one for free.

I find it excellent. Any time the day/night I can grab a Linux ISO from either news or torrents at fullspeed or stream a decent res podcast/youtube without buffering.

The future is business uncapped type of accounts - as Telkom costs come down (I think they're still bound by that court ruling to do that over the next few years) I hope that ISPs will reinvest in capacity so they can bring the home uncapped speeds to business uncapped, and eliminate business altogether.

At least with telkom you know it's not shared...

That's brilliant - the downside of ISPs sharing accounts - we should spread this info far and wide. If each time someone cancelled, they had to contact everyone else using that account and tell them update their password from 1122 to 2244 it'd cause them a headache.

Hehe i bet no mybb member will sign up for this. Only the uninformed will fall

Is OW at least now confirming that all their other products are k@k?
