Since we lost Starlink, I'm forced to use MTN based mobile data here on our farm. We run 2 external routers, topping up data as we need.

I thought I'd give Openweb's MTN mobile data service a try. Signed up for their month to month uncapped (1TB) full speed service. The most I can get here is 30Mbps, for the record.

Got my SIM on the 17 Jan, worked at 30Mbps! Yippee. For all of 6 hrs, then speed dropped to 20Mbps. Tech support promised to sort it, but the line stayed 20Mbps. Then 10, then 5. This is with many tickets opened on their rather opaque ticketing system. And lots of promises of escalation, getting it sorted with MTN etc

Decided to give my notice, and just go back to MTN, which works fine, but is a bit pricier.

Lo and behold, within an hour of applying for the cancellation, my line drops to 1Mbps.

What an absolute joke of an operation. I saw the other posts about how dodgy they were, but I thought I'd roll the dice.
Big mistake!

Just a heads up for anyone else that is thinking of using them. Consider this a public service message:)

What I'm trying to wrap my head around is how these guys can still operate...

Was I just unlucky? HelloPeter and the little bit of info here says otherwise, and suggests they're a bit of a scam operation, using false advertising and dodgy billing to get by.

But I recall a quote along the lines of don't attribute to malevolence what could be ascribed to incompetence. But then how are they still in business?

Anyone know who owns them? Are they private or part of a group?

Interestingly my SIM has been reset to full speed, I assume through no intervention of theirs but merely the start of the new month. Let's see how long it lasts:)

Sounds like regular MTN issues, not specific to any ISP.
I think it's more ISP related, based on a few metrics:
1: Support in general - pretty opaque, can't speak to a agent directly. Confusing parallel ticketing platforms.
2. My package doesn't show any stats, or invoices on the user portal. This can't be ascribed to MTN, surely.
3. They didn't run the DO, which is good news.
4. The service slowed to a trickle early in Feb again. I've given up on it and gone back to MTN data via MTN Momo for best prices.

Quick update...
When I applied for the service back in Jan, I was told I could only do it via debit order, even though they have a CC option in their application.
I reluctantly gave them my Investec acc details, but then the process stalled as they apparently couldn't use Investec. So we used my daughter's FNB account, and got the ball rolling.
I terminated the service in Jan as it was absolutely pathetic, and asked my daughter to check if they ever debited Febs account (1 month termination). She said there was no debit, which I ascribed to them just being useless at everything.
But then I decided to check my Investec acc, and lo and behold they debited me.
You can't make this stuff up...they are without a doubt absolutely fuxking muppets. Or really good scammers:)

I'd opened a ton of tickets, because they just didn't respond to most of them. Or they would close a ticket without any change being made.
Seems they finally got to them - only a few months late:) So no, nothing useful as I cancelled the service before the end of Jan.
I've just deleted the mails...but it's really surreal. I mean, how do they function as a company? I'm genuinely curious.

I'm sorry you had to go through that, it kinda feels like you're just a number..

More like lost in the wilderness. As just a number I'd expect average service. This was shite on all fronts: accounts, support and technical.

Our neighbours had Openweb. "My dear, rather use the Post Office, they're cheaper and just as useless"

1 more eMpTyN month then I'm gone and never doing business with the terrorist supporters again (apart from them being criminal in all spheres).

Got another email to say they're still 'responding' to my ticket lodged in Dec/Jan. Good to know they're on it:ROFL:
