Openweb Uncapped Feedback

5pm on the dot and suddenly speeds improve as quickly as they died at exactly 7am this morning.

Yip, 7am to 5pm is dead time for uncapped, only today it seemed worse than last week, when at least I could browse. I emailed and phoned support, but no response.

Hey Friends,

I'm afraid today there was an unknown problem. We are only starting to receive reports of the cause. I do apologize. These are always the worst.

However, if your problem is ongoing, please contact me so that we can find a backbone that suits your needs better. Please include your MyADSL nickname and ADSL username in the email.

Anyone playing online games with openweb? What is the best account for playing WOW ? Std, unshaped or gold ? I'm looking at the 1mb gold uncapped for R398. I currently have 384 Std-uncapped and very happy just not sure WOW will work well on it.

I'm on Ow Gold 384 on the VB backbone. I play Guild Wars (same port as WOW) and some other online games too. Amazing international (and local) latency.

It's not just Openweb, it's pretty much uncapped period... Afterall Openweb are merely resellers.
Oh I agree with you 100%. OW is now the 3rd ISP I've had an uncapped account with and the previous 2 also went the same way, i.e. inexplicable and sudden loss of performance followed by several attempts by myself to sort it out before giving up and moving on.

The problem with that statement is that it does not mention that it is the reseller's responsiblity to ensure that they and their customers get what they are paying for. Simply stating "Oh, it's a shaped account so you should expect to take a knock when the network is busy" is nonsense in the light of many of us being able to show that what we're experiencing is not traffic based, but time of day based. Add to this the level of shaping/throttling we're seeing lately (i.e. to death) and you can plainly see that we're not getting the service we're paying for (especially those of us with lower contention Gold accounts)

Kindly email me so that I can investigate.

Amen to the above in bold. I'm experiencing exactly the same problems. My account will be cancelled shortly if I don't get a solution soon (or if I'm told that it's "traffic based shaping" again when it clearly is blatant throttling...I have days worth of logs to prove it)

Getting fractions of a kb/s through NNTP at the moment on my 1mb Gold account. HTTP does not appear to be much better as I can't get speedtest.net to load in any reasonable timeframe nor can I even sign into Google Talk.

I'm getting a little annoyed with the constant having to contact Keoma to reset my port or change my backbone (once a week) as well as the poor performance of these Gold accounts during the week. I cannot fathom how they are supposed to have a lower contention ratio (which in my mind should mean more reasonable speeds during working hours compared to a standard customer) if the account is all but useless during the day. What exactly am I paying more for?

Even more frustrating is that these issues are new. I hadn't experienced any issues with OpenWeb either on my Gold or standard account prior to mid-July. I feel like I'm back on MWeb who also performed well until I had issues and tried in vain to resolve them.

When looking at pricing it seems the 1MB/s GOLD account is actually a 512kb account and the 1MB/s GOLD PLUS account the real 1MB/s account.

You get what you pay for.

I am on GOLD 4MB/s on IS backbone and don't have any issues at all. Actually my experience is MUCH MUCH better than what I was getting on MWEB.

Hmm, I might have it a bit wrong though, but that's just how I understood it. Perhaps Gold doesn't get shaped as badly as we do? I get download speeds of 6kb/s between 12 and 5, and the moment the clock strikes 5, speeds go back to normal.

The GOLD accounts are shaped, but we don't get any throttling like you guys do on the standard uncapped.

Regardless of whether it is "real 1mb uncapped" or not I should not be experiencing on my Gold account the type of "after hours only uncapped" speeds that I currently am. If I was paying for what I'm currently getting I'd be forking out about R200 less than the R398/pm I currently pay.

Anyway I've dropped Keoma a mail at his request so lets see where this goes.

That is absolute BS. We are paying for 1mbs access. Nowhere when I signed up did it say 512, or you cannot use your internet during the day. Regardless of whether we use standard or gold uncapped we should be able to use our lines during the day.
Blatantly shaping by time instead of by traffic is completely wrong in my opinion, as I'm sure quite a few people would agree with.

Today is the first time that I've gotten full speed on my downloads during the day. Now everyone, back away slowly from the control panels and don't touch anything.

That's because the shaping is not being applied - it's a Public Holiday.

I'm curious if you get your backbone swapped doesn't it hurt?

more serious note, do your username and password change after being switched over ?

Guys I need an account for playing WOW will "Uncapped LITE" be okay? I'm currently playing on my STD 386 line and latency is like 500-1800 hehe, but my DL are constant at about 32-36kbs.

Yes Prophet it does.
Interesting. How about this scenario then:

User gets onto backbone A with account A, all is well all is fast. Now it's kak, but we can ask for a backbone swap. Account A is "full and shaped", account B gets handed over as we go to backbone B. Cycle repeats, suspicious ?

Was pulling 100 - 150mb per hour, easily. Now, done 50mb since 5pm. Come end of the month, I'm cancelling this account. It's no fault on OpenWeb's side, and my experience with MrBeep has been excellent so far. Unfortunately, though, I don't have the money for a Gold account, and the Standard accounts are just resold IS accounts. I'm not willing to put up with IS's nonsense throttling and shaping policy, so I'm going to look for an uncapped account that isn't IS based. If the only other option is Mweb, I'll just have to take it.

There is no conspiracy theory. Different users have different needs, thus the different backbones. Each one has their positives and negatives.

OpenWeb is one of a very few companies that actually provide users with the option to move. Flexibility is not suspicious.

Hello Graal,

Are you still having a problem? All is running full speed on our side.
