The problem is that this definition is unspecified and very very vague. ISP's idea of a mild to low end user is something completely different from the users.

One only have unhappy customers when you have an expectation gap...and lets face it, there is a moerse expectation gap between ISP's and adsl users and ISP's is not helping by specifying vague terms of use, being silent on matters such as these.

My problem is that we are operating in a space were accounts is separated by terms such as low and medium, which is as clear as mud...and that is frustrating.

Now I pick an account based on low, my idea of Low is different from that of the ISP. They think it is High. So they shape the living daylights out of me. Now I am frustrated with my IPS. My frustration is born out of the expectation cap between myself and the ISP.

If they are upfront about these matters, there will be no expectation gap, hence no frustrations...
 
Straatkat, the terms and AUP of the IS-based uncapped accounts are extremely clear.

Top x% of users will be throttled/shaped. The rest will continue to enjoy the unshaped bliss.

For 4Mbps, top 50% gets shaped.
For those below 4Mbps, top 20% gets shaped.

Exactly what is so unclear here?
 
How easy would it be to swop openweb accounts ? Currently on gold, wouldnt mind giving the new one a try..

Now if only telkom could freakin fix our lines.. Wild fire toasted the telephone pole and a section of the cable which is now on the floor.. Hectic
 
if most people download 300 gigs then those wanting 250 gigs will get away with it. This is the only consumer set shaping that I know of ;)

Why are people struggling so much with this concept of the top 20%? :p

Dunno man. Seriously dunno.

Somehow the majority of them were sick for an entire week from school.
Happens to be the same week that percentages were being taught?

I'm baffled too.

The only part that does concern me about the top X% method:
Will they have some system in place where I can regularly check my "rank" in the userbase?

No problem with the percentages whatsoever. But how is it implemented?

Does it kick in immediately at 12:01am on the first of the month? Is bandwidth usage carried over from the previous month in defining top 20%?

Is it completely dynamic? Do they define top 20% based on 1 day's usage, 5 days usage, 10 days usage, what?

If you enter the top 20% when do you fall out again? Is your line throttled for a specific time frame? 1 day, 5 days, 10 days?

If it is instantly dynamic and you are near the 20% threshold does your line speed go up and down like a yo-yo?

What prevents IS from creating a pile of bogus accounts sitting on zero usage?

There is a hell of a lot more to this than just the percentage.

20% is vague. However, you may use these guidelines that we have derived. They are not exact at all, however, will assist in deciding which package is right for you:

384k Lite - More than 40GB, Standard Uncapped will suit you better
512k Lite - More than 80GB, Standard Uncapped will suit you better
1024k Lite - More than 150GB, Standard Uncapped will suit you better
4096k Lite - More than 50GB, Standard Uncapped will suit you better
4096k PLUS - More than 250GB, Platinum Uncapped will suit you better

Capped uncapped, actually only capped, no uncapped. Uncapped is a gimic to lure 70000 clients...

I'm busy with an official complaint to ASASA and the ISPA, that the term uncapped be srapped completely.

40GB on 384 is actually extremely reasonable imo.
I probably would use maybe half of that...

Is standard uncapped via MWeb or IS?
 
So, Mweb's P2P shaping is becoming quite bad of late. Would I see much benefit in spending the extra R200 to move from their 4MB uncapped to Openweb's Gold uncapped?

Is that right? 4Mb = 4 x 1Mb, but one third the bandwidth @ R50 more?
 
i would of thought platinum uncapped is for the heavy downloaders ie: 700+ pm
 
OpenWeb Gold is if you want an account with lower contention ratio, resulting in a better overall experience. It does not have a threshold.

If you could please find out/clarify: Will there be some method to check one's "rank" within the 80/20 or 50/50 structures?
Something like an account information page with "You are currently ranked #387/720 users"...

Would be REALLY useful to have that sort of thing at hand.
