I am using the Astraweb $10 unlimited one. Currently using the EU ssl server on port 443.

Why are you using port 443? Use 80 although astraweb don't fully support ssl so it makes no difference if i recall when i used them.

I remember on mweb astraweb crawled on ssl and normal but on news demon when you go from normal to ssl you get full speed. It was the only reason i left astraweb. They are easy to shape :D. Port 80 is not very easy to shape that is why mweb has ended up shaping the entire line.

I've never had any issues using any of Astraweb's servers and ports, so it actually irrelevant which port I use as they all run pretty much at the same speed - Astraweb is quite a bit cheaper than Newsdemon also.

Newsdemon is 9.99 with proper ssl servers and 50 connections. Plus you get 30gb free storage. I doubt astraweb can touch that deal :D.

I dig the 30gb storage as well. Nice to have my work backed up on something outside my house :D. If everything got stolen my work will be safe.

Sigh, mine is fluctuating between 220-250kB/s max, using SSL on port 80 via news demon.

Seems like my glory days with VB have come to an end..downloading wise that seems. :(

Are you sure you telkom line is running at 4 meg? Mine says 4096 but i cannot get more than 200 at times. some issue with my exchange telkom says. Some days it flies at 400 other days it's at 120 . Really depends on how telkom is feeling haha. Still 220-250 is very good though.

Been on Altech since yesterday evening. (Yeah, I said I declined, but I've been forced to try it out since my previous log-in stopped working.)

On the downside: NNTP and torrents are dead in the day, but there is some limited access after hours ( +-100kB/s on NNTP and +-60kB/s on torrents). NNTP SSL on port 80 doesn't bypass the shaping.

On the upside: It is very nifty around the web. HTTP downloads are good 24/7. Skype and other P2P networks also work well. SSH and FTP to external servers is very responsive. Latency on WoW is good so... happy children. YouTube streams effortlessly.

Overall a good experience. I seldom use torrents, but I've made some "alternative" arrangements w.r.t. NNTP which should work well.

Hopefully things won't deteriorate after a week like it did on IS.

Killa I'm running 4MB, my exchange is upgraded to support 10MB as well, if you go back a page or two, I did a speedtest with my free 1GB afrihost account and NNTP is lightning fast, maxes my line at 960-980kB/s. Switching to my VB account, doing a speedtest gives me this: http://www.speedtest.net/result/1382745761.png

On IS, it gave me constant 5-6MB speeds on speedtest , I can steam youtube vids in HD during anytime of the day, and downloads were running at 480kB/s-510kB/s... but like some other guys said here, IS is only about good for a week and then the speeds start to plummet, I haven't seen anyone here yet NOT complaining about their IS speeds which gets slow rather quick in a short space of time. My VB account ran like a boss for 8 months, but now.. its just plain dead. I can't stream Youtube vids anymore, speedtest results are terrible as you've seen the link I posted above, even got disconnected from the EA server the other night 3 times when playing BC2, the only light side, it does give me kick ass low latencies for gaming which I do love and browsing is still fast. I'm also used to it maxing it out my line like your having at the moment, I also found it strange when other people had problems with their VB account, when mine was superb all round, but now it seems the tables have turned and I'm stuck with slow speeds now.

It's almost as if some of these accounts are locked into a certain "pool of extreme shaping" and you get penalized with slower speeds where other accounts get better speeds / priority over others. I'm not saying nor implying it's the case whatsoever, but sometimes I can't help wonder what's the reason why our Gold accounts perform exceptionally well the one day and then the next day/week/month is performance goes down the drain. I'm not willing to fork out R738 a month for NNTP downloads capping out at 220kb/s (which it's doing at the moment) nor want to have youtube videos buffer on me that ALWAYS streamed perfectly. I just wish all of us always had good performance no matter what. :(

BUT enough of my ranting.. I'll send MrBeep an email tomorrow and see what we can do to put a smile back on my dial.

Been getting constant disconnects on Steam the whole night, and when playing online games, the latency will suddenly spike to 700+ every five minutes. Anybody else experiencing this? Not sure which backbone standard uncapped uses, but I'm, guessing the IS backbone.

It's suddenly started getting so bad, I'm unable to get a stable connection to Steam for more than a minute at a time, and when it actually does connect, I get download speeds of under 10kb/s. I don't think I've even done 4gb since Sunday, so certainly I can't be throttled already?

Edit: Okay, now I can't access at all. Just tells me steam is unable to connect to the servers.

Double ninja edit: Nevermind, nothing on Openweb's side. Steam released a new update and broke something. :P People all over the steam forums are complaining about connectivity issues.

Cool, thanks for that link - may take it up if Astraweb fails me.

ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 4096 kbps 511 kbps
Line Attenuation 11.5 db 3.4 db
Noise Margin 18.9 db 29.3 db

Anyone tell me what this means, and if it's bad or good?

I'm getting great speeds this morning on my Gold uncapped account. Http rock solid. I dont P2P, so couldnt care what that runs on. Network - Altech

Last night my line speeds were terrible for some unknown reason. im on IS. no pages were showing, torrents were at a stand still, i msgd Keoma, within 10 minutes my problem was resolved. Now everythings back to normal :) Openweb is amazing :)

I'm having problems with online games on my account. Whenever I enter a game through Steam, the latency jumps into the roof. It stays that way until I join a server, after which it normalizes. The problem with this is, I can't connect to the EA servers to actually join a game in Bad Company 2, because the latency is so high it just keeps telling me it couldn't connect. MW2 does much the same. I can't actually join a server, because my latency is so high I can't connect to any.

What's strange is that the speed tests are showing normal results. It just happens the moment I try to run an online game.

When I logged back into my Mweb account, the problem doesn't occur at all.
