Hey All

I have had absolutely no problems my side. Been perfect thus far this month.

Hi guys.

I'm on OW 4Mb Gold on IS, and been reading the mail.

I mainly use file hosts and Usenet, so download speed is important for me.

For what it's worth, I took a look at my download logs over the weekend. I see there was a problem late on the Friday evening 12th from around 10pm when throughput dropped dramatically. This persisted until after 2am, after which things were back to normal again. This would confirm many of the postings here, including Mr Beep's.

I find that generally, due to the shaping, during business hours (07h00 to 17h00 week days) my account is all but useless for downloading anything from file hosts or Usenet, but seems quite OK for browsing (I think this is the general idea with shaping - duh !). After 17h00, it picks up immediately to about 200KBytes/second, and then later in the evening around 10/11pm I get back to maxing my 4Mb line again. Weekends I can max my line most of the time, but only with multithreaded downloads, typically file hosts AND Usenet at the same time.

What I find so interesting on this thread is the extremely diverse range of experiences - some are happy, others are ranting. In my own case there has been many an occasion when I am experiencing the exact opposite of what others are.

All I can say is that with Telkom, various backbones, different ISP's with different policies, and the occasional outage thrown in, it's pretty much a guessing game what actually goes on.

I would like to thank Mr Beep for the personal responsibility he assumes when trying to fix specific problems - this is unusual in today's ISP environment.

Update: Over the last two evenings, things not as good - only about 25% throughput even late into the evening, then from about 10pm it gradually picks up, only maxing my 4MB line between 2 and 6am the next morning. Let's hope things improve - I need a few more max hours !!

Hmm, the shaping times seems to have moved for me. Usually I only got absolutely horrible speeds between 12 and 5 pm, but this morning at 8 on the dot, downloads dropped to 6kb/s.

Hi Graal,

You are on a Standard Uncapped SHAPED account for R139. Kindly upgrade your service to an Unshaped account in order to achieve full speeds 24 / 7.

ajules, I am glad to hear things are going well for you.

I'm on Platinum and last month there was a c0ck-up between the accounts departments and I was allocated a new DSL account. Needless to say it's dog slow even at six on a Sunday morning.

I'm going to order a Wireless solution from Interprise.

I also have low download speeds on both local and international.
Problems starded last night for me.

Yes, I can understand that, but what I don't get is why the timeframe in which we get shaped is inconsistent. I'm definitely not getting shaped 24/7.

Or wait, I'm not sure if I'm getting shaped or throttled. This is how I see shaping and throttling, can someone tell me if I've got it right?

At any time, night and day, if I try to use a torrent, I get a maximum of 2kb/s. That's shaping, because it is a certain protocol that is being limited permanently?

From about 5PM until about 8am, I get full line speed. Between 8am and 6pm, I get drastically reduced line speeds. That's throttling?

Unfortunately that is just how the standard uncapped is. You really should get GOLD.

Yeah, but is the second one throttling or shaping? I can live with it if it's throttling, because I'm more or less done with the entire backlog of downloads I had, so theoretically, I shouldn't get throttled too much, because I'm probably going to have very little downloads from here on out. If it's shaping, it's an entire different thing altogether, because it's a bit difficult to work with such slow speeds for the better part of my day spent awake.

I would love to upgrade to Gold, but unfortunately my budget won't allow for that. Going to request an Mweb trial account sometime, even though I said I'd never go the Mweb route, and then I'll check how that one works.

I'm running Gold 4Mb on IS and I can assure you it IS shaped - very poor download speeds during the day (more or less like old dial-up), and it comes awake at 17h00 on the dot. How much more shaped/throttled GOLD is from STANDARD I don't know, but the GOLD shaping during the day is quite vicious. I sometimes have to switch over to my Telkom account, where I get full line speed 24/7, because it is unshaped but, of course CAPPED !!

My 4MB Gold IS account I have at the moment is definitely shaped during business hours, I can't get more than 125kb/s on NNTP, where in the past on VB it went like a boss at 400kb/s plus. Then VB just started to degrade for me, downloads didn't run full speed anymore, streaming was even worse than 384k speeds.

Then I got moved to an IS account, I'm not too happy with my NNTP speeds overall, on weekends it does run 350-450kb/s which is fine, but I want to have that speed all the time. On the flip side, everything and I mean EVERYTHING streams like a boss on IS, where on VB it didn't always in the past. That's the one good thing about this IS account, I do love streaming lots, and it's really awesome, but latency wise for international gaming VB was better, which I miss.

Perhaps I should ask MrBeep for a trial VB account for 24 hours and see if I get better speeds now than I did about 3-4 weeks ago before I got moved to IS. If it's still the same, I'll persist with IS, at the expense of shaped speeds during business hours (which were nonexistent on my old VB account). :(

Do a speedtest.net test, then link the results here. Then, straight after 5, run another one and link it again.

Edit: Heh, downloads are dead for me. Can't download anything right now.
