I'm busy downloading a game off Steam right now at 420kb/s. Been like that for the past couple hours.

It's definitely not throttling. Going by how many people are having issues, I have a feeling MrBeep is going to pop in just now saying there is a fault somewhere.
 
Got a VB account earlier and testing it in conjunction with my current IS account, speeds were a bit better on VB averaging almost 250kb/s (like it did before I went over to IS) whilst IS still chugged along at 120-130kb/s. As soon as 20:15, IS unleashed it's fury and I'm downloading now at 460-480kb/s and it's flying. Guess they switch off the shaping at 20:15 sharp. Will monitor the VB account again after my current download finishes and during business hours tomorrow. VB also struggled to stream earlier, whilst IS was going like a boeing. :D
 
Downloads are still capped at 6kb/s. It's really, really frustrating. :/

Edit: MrBeep tested my account, and according to him it's running at full speed. Going to restart my router and PC to see what the problem is, because then it's definitely on my end.

I'm very strongly contemplating the Gold now. Do I have to cancel my current account, or can I simply upgrade it to Gold?

Edit: Actually, that's so affordable, if I can simply upgrade it, I'll take it. :D

You should just be able to upgrade. It's definitely worth it.
 
I've mailed Mr Keoma, and if he can upgrade it, I'm taking it. At this price, Gold is entirely within my price range, and most of my issues should be sorted.
 
Meh, that speedburst only lasted for about an hour, back to 200kb/s. I just can't understand what's up.. one moment it's flying and the next it's as if that shaping kicks back.

Oh well, guess I'll have to live with it for the time being :(
 
/sigh, I asked to be moved to VB and am now getting full speed on NNTP, but now gaming suffers - horrible latency in games, getting around 600 - 900 ping. IS was running at 220 - 280. Maybe tomorrow will be better.
 
Hmm, so I'm upgrading. Just waiting for MrBeep to confirm for me. Which backbone is the best all rounder? In order of importance for me is browsing, then gaming then the occasional heavy download.

Frankly, I'd say try them all until you find one that works for you. Altech or Vodacom Business are the two which are generally considered "best" for 24/7 browsing, video streaming, etc. You'd probably get better latency on Altech or IS for gaming though, as per Rohan's post :p Although his latency is unusual.
 
Download speed is jumping around like a crazed rabbit. Is it telkom again?

EDIT: Little bit more stable now.

Maybe try BCS first, then Altech, then Vodacom.
 
I recently upgraded to 1meg Gold (IS Backbone), but I haven't seen speeds anywhere close to 90kb/ps, infact my download speeds are generally 26-38kb/ps. I was getting that back on 384k Gold. In general this account feels more like a standard account than a Gold one (Comparing my experience with 384k Gold).

Also, this isn't my experoence after one day, it's after a week. I have also reset my ports and router etc.

What is the norm for 1Meg Gold, is this out of the ordinary or normal?

There's is currently a Seacom issue. Let us know what you get later today. Should be fixed by then.

Have yo uupgraded your line to 1mb/s?

Yes, I should mention that on Telkom and WA data I get close to 100kb/ps consistently.

Also, this was my experience over the course of a week, the Seacom issue is only today as far as I know.
