in light of the abysmal packet loss i am experiencing with Afrihost, I plan to swap to either OpenWeb or WebAfrica.

WebAfrica Option = 10MB line plus 200GB SHAPED (40GB anytime + 160GB midnight to 6AM) = R549pm

OpenWeb Option = 10MB line plus 15GB UNSHAPED peak + uncapped midnight to 6AM = R503pm

so far, OpenWeb is looking like the more enticing option. What do you guys reckon ? Or is there another alternative ?

OpenWeb: shared account, open felt offices.
WebAfrica: table mountain

You know, I've been with just about every single ISP out there. Capped, Uncapped.

WebAfrica: Uncapped - Don't even get me started on their dodgy star rate system.

Capped: Haven't used their capped so can't comment.

OpenWeb: Uncapped - Oh-Em-Gee...... *** !

Capped: Really not bad in my experience. Gaming wise. EU servers & ZA servers. 0% packet loss

To be honest I'd go with neither. I'm with Axxess currently and it's perfect.

But each to his own I guess.

Streaming, gaming, downloads?

I'd rate Web Africa over openweb.

Go to anyone but openweb. Crystal Web IMO

*sigh* ok now i'm more confused than before :( for every one person that hates on Openweb, i find another who raves about them.

regarding Web Africa, i have used a trial 1GB account and it seemed to work ok. they say that capped accounts are shaped though, and i think that will be the nail in the coffin.

what about the others ? Axxess/Cybersmart/AtomData or any of the other smaller ISP's ?

Axxess pricing does not make sense.

Stand alone 10MB line = R395
100GB data (50+50) = R189
total therefor would be = R584

but the bundled offering on a 10MB line with 100GB is R729 ??

They only shape p2p during the day. After 5pm even torrents are fast.

Definitely Web Africa.

quality and bandwidth aside, at least WebAfrica is a legitimate business with proper offices, staff and such. Also part of that ISPSA group i think?

what exactly is it that you guys have found to be a problem with OW ? I have a couple buddies using them and they seem happy. plus the UNCAPPED after hours is awesome.

but i'm nervous about the fact that so many people seem to despise them. why is this the case ?

Seriously?

Besides the ethical issues, the uncapped accounts tend to be after hours accounts. Most of them grind to a halt during hours.

Don't let that stop you though.

My usual +1 for WebAfrica, business capped is pretty much unshaped as far as my 3Mbps line is concerned. Their support is not that good at the moment, but in previous years it was great. I'm keeping an eye on CrystalWeb though, they seem to be more or less WebAfrica with brilliant support (capped.crystalweb.co.za == dsl.webafrica.co.za btw, but I believe that's just a temporary start-up agreement).

If you want to play local games be warned that openweb nor webafrica will give you good pings. You will get unstable ping (shaping applied in real time) on both.

Openweb downloading sucks... webafrica it is pretty ok. Youtube isn't an option on openweb at all even 240p will not load 20 hours of the day and on webafrica it will work 90% of the time.

I am cancelling my webafrica. Business uncapped works fine but for the price I can get better capped account at another isp.

I changed my WebAfrica business uncapped for the 200GB/800GB capped package. Not a single issue on this.
We do online gaming daily, and most TV is Netflix/Hulu. Superb account.
