Opera is a fantastic and feature-packed browser, yet somehow Safari and Chrome are not getting displaced anytime soon.

I don't know what it is, the UI is somewhat lacking at times. I'm gonna give it a second chance now. Hope it's stable because the first 10.5 beta wasn't

Do these milisecond speed increases between browsers actually matter when our internet is so terribly slow? ;) Haven't used Opera for years, gonna play around with it quickly though. I think Firefox's addons have be safely with them, for now....

EDIT: are there local mirrors for this release? Seacom troubles ;)

@ Synaesthesia - that's the reason they called it a beta. They overhauled a lot for 10.5 as the article states so it was never going to be a comfy experience.

I've been using Opera for over 4 years and have never felt the need to migrate. Opera simply tries harder and goes the extra mile in terms of features, customization and innovation.

Side line comment:

Opera is my favorite browser for PC and mobile phones.
But forget trying to use on a blackberry like my new 8520. Tortoise deluxe

Opera claims fastest browser in the world for Mac

That's like saying, "Bicycle, fastest method of transport... if you don't have a car."

I know, I know... shameless trolling on my part

I used Opera (on Doze) back in the day before I found Firefox. Since then, never looked back. Tried Chrome for a while as well but always came back to Firefox

Opera is a beautiful browser and the first tabbed browser ever made. When it came out it was the only alternative to IE worth spending time one. I first tried it while still running Windows 3.11 on a 33.6kbps dial-up connection.

Why would anyone want to defile such a pristine piece of software one a bunkered down OS like OSX is beyond me. Rather let me lend you my 7 install stiffies of Windows for Workgroups and the old zoltrix.

I like Opera but for my day job there are far too many plugins that I absolutely cannot do without to even contemplate not using FireFox. I do, however, use Opera to test sites, especially if I'm already logged in in FireFox and need session that's not logged in.

I just tried it on the iPhone 3G tonight - no speed deamon either.

The compression feature is great too.

Which compression feature?

Which compression feature?

If you're on dial up or ISDN you can make use of their TURBO Browse feature. Opera's servers compress images and instead of bulky GIFs/PNGs/JPEGs you get much lower quality ones - speeding you up.

Just wanted to make sure before I comment on this. As you rightly mention, you connect via their servers. Even for SSL traffic - so folks, careful about this when you use sites that you have to log into, like, say, your internet banking.

You mean it sends the data un-encrypted between their server and your PC, then encrypts on their server and the bank decrypts that? I doubt banks would allow that.

No, you connect via SSL to their server, and their server connects via SSL to the bank. The thing is, you're effectively giving them your loging details.

Opera is like a Lexus, has all the bells and whistles (good value for money) and more but for some reason we all want a BMW or Merc :)

Which Firefox is great for.

However, if you want the Bugatti Vayron of the browser world then Chrome is it :D

Safari is more like a skateboard in comparison :D

The other thing with opera is the size of it and the features it comes with. Using Firefox is like an easter egg hunt - you need to get a plugin for everything Opera does as is. For example mouse gestures - Opera had that for years and the only way to get it in Firefox is via an extension.

Chrome is good, if you have 8GB of RAM.

It should be - its a like riding a skateboard in skate park where the entry fee costs more than a Bugatti Veyron :p
