just read an article on techcrunch about this.
the author makes the point that the most popular browsers at the moment are dumbed down for regular users and don't have all the bells and whistles.
which is clearly visible in chrome and to a lesser extent in safari.
addons at the expense of performance are firefox's greatest issue imo.
chrome and safari don't have everything i need, but they probably are more than enough for the average user who just wants a simple pretty interface.

What's Safari lacking? It's got an awesome web inspector, good performance, what more do you want, even as a power user or web developer?

IMO Safari 4 + Adblock + Flashblock + Glims = pretty close to perfection. The only thing that's lacking is search functionality in the url bar like Chrome.

The author must be young. I don't recall older browsers (Netscape Navigator Gold, any one?) offering more powerful interfaces than anything on the market today. On the contrary, they were far more limiting and less configurable.

You get good add-ons and bad add-ons.

What's Safari lacking?

For my work environment, a Linux port.

IMO Safari 4 + Adblock + Flashblock + Glims = pretty close to perfection.

To mash your comment and murraybiscuit's comments together, the problem with add-ons for a lot of people is they're essentially going for plugins that have some sort of cosmetic application. Adblock/Flashblock for example. Both these have to parse the page just like the browser does, so for each one you double the execution time.

In my work, I can't use either, because I support clients who run sites who use those things. The add-ons I use are debugging tools generally, and other functional things like clippings (for prefabs), which doesn't slow things down.

Firstly I must Point out That the problem with Firefox is That the XulRunner engine although allows for great customization, it is slow.

Opera Doesn't have Plugins like Firefox has, however it has just about every feature built into it as well as a bunch of widgets you can get.

Opera comes with a E-mail Client, IRC client, News-reader, RSS reader.
For Web Developers who use Firebug and FirePHP and are being rediculously stubborn saying they can never switch, think again, Opera Has Dragonfly a great source analyzer, Debugger.

Opera is an acquired taste, Personally, I despised it at first, but now I swear by it.
